6 month old hen eye swollen shut and HUGE

I've tried the towel before.... but I wasn't very diligent about getting the puss out... I was more focused on getting flushing the eye out... I didn't try the tweezers though... I will have to try that!!! Thanks for the advice! What do you think could have caused this and how do you think I can prevent it in the future? It just randomly sprouted one day...

I have had chickens for years and had this problem before. Early detection helps; when the eye is this big it has been swelling for 5 r 6 days. I use Tylan 200 but be careful to much will kill them, but eyes this big needs a good dose. Not doctored means certain death. U will need to give Tylan for the next few days. I have never had this problem before as long as I free range my chickens. It has always occurred when they were penned for long periods. Usually winter and run got really messy. But be on the look out more will get sick usually if one gets it unless doctored quick.

Like any medicine, too much can be lethal. Tylan 200 is tylosin 200mg/ml, Tylan 50 is tylosin 50mg/ml, so either can be used, but less of the 200 is needed because it's 4 times as strong. These types of eye/sinus infections can occur for a number of reasons... I have four right now that I'm treating and their infections are secondary infections from fowl pox. Of course it's always a good idea to isolate a bird with this type of infection, but it's possible that it's not contagious. As for certain death? Unlikely if they're eating and drinking.

It's not usually the disease that kills them, it's dehydration and starvation.

" Tylan Soluble 100 grams
100 grams water soluble for chronic respiratory disease and sinusitis.

Do not use in layers producing eggs for human consumption. "...... Is this truth I just read it in Strombergs chicken!

It's perfectly fine to use in egg laying chickens as long as you follow proper withdrawal.
