6 or 8 week quail culling

You may be referring to the study on inbreeding depression in which case what youre saying isnt far off but still not exactly accurate. Depression is measuring the amount of physical decline between generations, and all species are subject to it. Full sibling pairings repeated for multiple generations will bring you to a genetic dead end. Short of full sibling pairings back to back to back there are few side effects to inbreeding as long as its kept within reason.

My post is about killing birds at 6 weeks not a pissing match about genetics thats blowing up my email. Thats why you can make your own post about breeding birds my post isn't about breeding its about killing birds so yeah i kinda have a right to say make your own post and get off mine.

Yeah i searched archives no real to the point answers more like you do what you wanna do. Just seeing if somebody had actually done a side by side comparison with 6 to 8 week old birds and a to the point answer yes you get x amount more meat. Tried Google but nothing in stone there either. Thanks Invision good luck with your flock also.

Sorry to call you out but i want to see this supposed information. Coturnix handle inbreeding as well or better than any poultry so im curious to see this scientific info. Typically it takes 17 or more generations of inbreeding coturnix before negative traits will begin to show themselves. myself and many breeders i know intentionally line breed coturnix constantly and we never see any physical defects and often, even after multiple generations dont even notice a marked decline in fertility or hatchability.
Will start a new thread as I'm interested in hearing more about your opinion on our results, and that of others too.

Cull at six weeks for uniform carcass size, cull at 8 weeks for the top of the growth curve (the point the bird has eaten as much food as it will convert quickly to weight) cull at 12 weeks for a filled out carcass that is trimmed in fat. From 6-8 weeks they fill out some but by 12 weeks are fully filled out. You haveto experiment to see what you like. My video on processing is with 12 week+ old birds if you want to get an idea on what the carcass will look like.

This information has been helpful to me. I was going to wait until 8 weeks to cull but the males were fighting so bad I did it today, at 7 weeks. It was my first time. I was a nervous wreck but it went fairly smoothly. "Dc3085" your video was very helpful. My question is about resting the meat. Lots of videos on dispatching but they all end at the clean bird. The only thing I found on here was somebody that soaks in brine overnight. How do I store the bird in the fridge if not brining? In water? Dry in a bag? Do I need to rest the meat if I will be freezing? Is 24 hours enough resting time?
