6 week old chicks chirping non stop

:lau They like you. They want to hang out with you. They're bored.

Whereabouts do you live? I put my chicks out in the unheated greenhouse a couple days ago and they're really enjoying being semi-outdoor birds. I'm at a one-mile high elevation in the central Black Hills, SD. We barely have grass yet here. It dips below freezing every night and they're fine. The batch before them went to a chicken tractor in the back yard with a heating pad brooder. It was -16° one night for them and they didn't blink.

Do you have a coop and run ready? It's time...
CindyinSD, how old are your chicks that they can withstand such cold?

I guess they were around 3-4 weeks when I put them out. I gave them their feed bag-wrapped heating pad, so they all snuggled up together on that every night. Chickens are unbelievably tough. As a rule though, they handle the cold a lot better than they do the heat.

I’m just laughing so hard reading this and seeing the size of your chicks.
Reminded me of my first chicks

I was a helicopter parent and they only were out of sight when I went to the store.
I remember them being crazy ready to go outside and me worrying and checking on them out in the coop ALL NIGHT!

They were fine. I was a mess. Lol

I got my first ones toward the end of September. They were in the garage for a couple nights, then out they went to the new coop I had built for them. First night was right around freezing. I kept running out to make sure they were under the brooder plate. :lau :lau :lau I finally draped it with a cotton cloth and only then did they consent to be corralled. They weren't nearly as cold as I was worried. After the third or fourth night I finally stopped running out at all hours to check on them.

I'm not going to sleep tonight 😅
I made my husband put up security lights and I'm about to put the trail cam out in the coop so we can see how their night went 🤣
I am so jealous. I wish I could justify a video baby monitor so I could see mine. I’m at least only checking these babies once at night at about 3 am.

I miss them in the house. But I don’t miss the mess! And at Under 3 weeks old they were flying out of the playpen! So I would come in the room and if the cover was even left a tiny bit to one side I had chicks walking around the room. I had a sandbox mirror and 2 roosts and they were still ready to fly the coop.
So I moved them out. They seem fine with it. I check on them 5-6 times a day
