6 week old chicks, what can I supplement with?

Why is it you believe you shouldn't give them their own eggs scrambled? I know I and others have and haven't seen any ill effects. I'm just wondering if it's a personal choice or if you have any info on why not?

No, I meant store bought or a friends eggs!
My girls love their scrambled eggs! I mix their shells into it to give them protein!

Okay I got it. When you said "out of your flock" you meant outside of your flock, I read it as the opposite, lol.

Thanks for all the responses. What kind of starter did you or do you guys feed. I been feeding them Purina but the Dumor (tractor supply brand) is nearly half the price. Also Dumor is 20% protein where Purina is 18%

I started with Nutreena but switched to Dumor [ they like it better] and used the treated until they were 16 wks.

Im glad to hear yours like it better. I bought a 50lb bag of the Dumor this evening I hope mine like it. I really hope it’s non medicated also I couldn’t find anything that said it was or wasn’t

I've never seen DuMOR medicated Starter, but you can check the tag on the bottom of the bag. Here are two tags for Purina Start & Grow. One medicated, the other not.

Bread isnt very good for them. I like to give mine cat food soaked in warm water. They love it and it gives them a good protein boost. I only give it once a week though. Usually on the coldest day.

I’ve done this too, but be aware that cat food is different in composition and I recall salt levels are higher. So, your occasional approach is good.

Dumor is fine, but I always found my birds (quail or chickens) did better on other brands. I’ve used Purina, kolbach, and another I can’t remember.

I have 15 six and a half week old chicks. I’m feeding Purina non medicated start and grow. I want to give them something more in this cold weather and just something more to enjoy period. I would like to give them something to scratch for but all the scratch I’ve seen says only feed to adult chickens. Could I give them cracked corn to scratch at or no?? I gave them some old hamburger buns the other evening and they showed zero interest.

They really need just formulated feed at this young age. A “treat” mine love -come running for type of a treat- is wet feed. Yes, crumble plus water, sit for 10 min and stir. Apparently very yummy. You could buy a higher protein feed and wet that down as a different taste for them ... non medicated turkey starter or game bird feed are both good options for higher protein formulated feed meant for birds and poultry.


If you give them other treats, you can give a chopped up raw pumpkin, left over canned pumpkin, grapes, blueberries, etc. a treat all my birds love is chopped cabbage (includes Brussel sprouts) raw. Some people say they have had success using a whole cabbage, using eye bolt screwed into the root end and hung for birds to peck. And taking eggs and throwing them in the blender (shells and all) then cooking all is a good treat of protein and no added salt.

Might sound bad, but we had some noisy and mean cockerels which we butchered and cooked. Some of that meat was chopped fine and served back to the chickens. They are omnivores....

It was Nutreena medicated.
