$62.50 for an office visit for a chicken!

I agree you got off cheap. There is not a local avian vet near here that i know of. The closest one is 60-70 miles away. My grandma took her cockatail there once and walked out a bit more than $300 lighter.

WOW! i guess im lucky my vet doesnt charge me and if she does its like $20 but then again shes in my 4h group. i just got eye drops for one of my birds free and its $17 for a little tube

Doc Brown is a PhD in Poultry Science. He does know what he's talking about. Folks ask for help here on BYC all the time and expect it with no diagnostics or physical examination. At least he has the education to back up his diagnosis. He's helped me more than once when I was at my wits end. The only reason he's charging anything at all now is because his time was getting away from him and he was getting calls all day and night.

I personally can't afford to take my chickens to the vet, if I could find one who knew about chickens. Most folks learn to euthanize on their own because of this.

Does she just sit around on the nest all the time? Are you sure she is not just being broody? Try feeding her something a little more nutritious like scrambled egg to see if you can get some weight on her. You checked her for mites or lice? What do you normally feed her? Yes that is rather cheap for a vet to see a bird.

Wow I would never have thought prices so high for seeing a chicken at the vet

We often have poop samples checked, but do not take sick birds in.

We can not afford these prices and will cull under most unfortunate circumstances involving serious injury and/or illness....

i found a vet here that treats livestock and domestic animals. After weeks of trying to identify a worm situation, I resorted to going to the vet to have it examined as nothing I bought including Valbazene worked. They spent a lot of time and let me come back in the research area to look through books, use microscopes, and generally work together to figure out my situation. I left with medication for my girl (antibiodics) medication for my entire flock of 12 (for the water), worming reccomendation and wormer for under $45.00! I even got a follow up call a week later to see how they were doing. Holy cow bat man. I found myself a new vet! My last one charged me over $1000 for issues with my cat on the first trip, $300 for the second, and $500 to have her euthanized, cremated, and given back to me.

I don't know why people are shocked that it's the same price for a vet to see a chicken as it is a dog or cat. It still takes the same amount of the doctors time, as well as their staff's time, and clinic resources....
