6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

I couldn't find anything on the trader jo's website about the hatching eggs, the website is confusing so I think that I might go the old fasiond way and write a letter, or maybe call there sometime soon
You won't find "hatching eggs" at Trader Joe's, what you get are Fertile "eating" eggs in the refrigerated section. Then you stick em in the bator and Pop! - little yellow fuzzies! Here is my latest attempt.
400

Edited to add - the yellow ones are TJs, the others are my homegrown mutts

Awww. It's like an adorable fuzzy tide.

Air cell up? Then do I turn them side to side...never pointy side up?
-sigh-
Really I do research things....

Yes, air cell side up and then the whole incubator tilts from side to side. That is why it is called an octagon! You do not do hand turning.

That's why I wanted this one ( less time with it open ) but I'm just not getting this rocking the machine side to side, and I can't find a video... If I rock at the eggs just fall over, or I spilled water, either way they don't really seem to turn...

Grrrrr.

I lost another egg this morning. A pretty olive one, and it had a live embryo the size of my thumb!!

I have to do something about my turner. I put water bottles on there for thermal mass, but now they seem to be binding it when I try to turn and make it jolt. Thus, the broken egg. So I guess I have to remove them and figure some other way to put them in or just not have them. <sigh> Hopefully I'll have the materials to build better turners soon. I just built these out of what I had available and I knew they might be problematic. I didn't think they would prove me right so very soon.

Well, this is what the test hatch is for.

The Brinsea octagon incubators are odd. I can get 44 regular chicken eggs into my octagon 40. It has two trays and each will hold 22 eggs.

I have the auto turning cradle but I have burnt out two of them and had to manually turn the cradle. It is very easy to do though.

I can't wait to see the candling report and or pictures of the eggs in 4 more days!
