You can open it--take them out when they are dry though. They can get too cold if you take them out too soon.

Is the brooder ready?

So I bought a single leghorn hen and put her in quarentine and for those weeks I collected her eggs and incubated some of them from the 3rd week, almost all of them are fertile! She was in with just her own breed so I should have leghorn babies in 10 days. Course this means it is a staggered hatch when I add the HAL eggs but it should work out I think!

I also have one lone mystery egg. It is off white and they are often found out in the yard. I don't have a hen that should lay that color. I do have 2 young Cayuga ducks, but those are not due I thought to lay till spring and aren't they supposed to lay black eggs? However I looked them up and some lay this off white color so..... maybe it is a duck and due on the 22nd. Out of 6 eggs of this kind I put in, only one was fertile.

So now that I am thinking about it, maybe it is the duck that likes to be with on her own. (We have 4) and we free range. She hangs out on a fallen log, and the rest explore all over the place. Maybe is laying, or sick of the 2 males. Not sure......
