6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

if I stare at the eggs will they hatch faster? :) develop quicker?

Also if you talk to them they hatch faster! :gig

Advice needed...I got my HAL eggs finally about 40 min ago.  :celebrate one Aircell was all over the place...completely detached so I fed it to the girls in their oatmeal...it was #8 and she can't fit it anyway.  one is saddle but firmly where it supposed to be one looks perfect, the rest are either not visible or just a little wobbly.  I am supposed to set them now for the HAL but am warming them up.  Should I give them 24 hours for the air cells?  I think they were all laid on Sunday or Monday.

Live chicks are more important than HAL contests.   This is a broody hatch so no egg cartons will be tolerated by the mother to be.

No advice but glad your broody gets her eggs. :D

Still no word on my eggs

I feel your pain

I would most likely participate in a Valentines HAL. It's about the time I start back hatching anyway. It would give me a good excuse to get silkie eggs from somebody else for a change instead of selling them all the time.

You are in!

Send me a pm with the number you are setting.

I set eggs at 8:30 this morning before heading out the door for work. I don't want to give numbers for the sake of the contest but here are the types I set:

Buff Orpingtons
Rhode Island Reds
White Wyandottes
Barred Rocks
Red Leghorns
Silkies ( may or may not have a silkie dad)
Lavender Ameraucanas

and because chicken math is easy and I had room in the bator.....a couple barnyard mutts from my LA roo over a Dark Brahma hen.

I also have 5 eggs in lockdown in the hatcher due tomorrow from a test batch. The LA roo over the following hens:

LA x2
Blue Andalusian x1
BCM x1
White Rock x1

Good luck to everyone. May your temps always be perfect!

I've got Buff orpington hens, RIRs, and Blue Andalusians too! I may be interested in a couple of the lavender Ameraucana chicks if u could part with the cute things

I've been told to use nail polish before... Never tried it though. I've read about using paraffin wax to seal the hole after you make the little hole to color your chicks... Anybody ever done that at day 19 or earlier you poke a little hole and then inject some food colouring to dye the chicks feathers...

Never heard of coloring the chicks, that's interesting.

I painted the wall next to my 'bator... You know, to watch it dry if I get bored.

I may have to do that LOL

got some eggs cooking!

Nice looking eggs!
I am so excited. I will have a full bator of d'Uccle eggs later today! I started collecting 9 days ago cause I was worried the gals would lay too sparsely. But the more balmy temps this past week combined with 6 layers versus the 3 I had last spring ended up with more eggs than fit in my turner! I decided to not hatch any that were very very dirty and ruled out a few more during collection that may have gotten too cold from being laid in the feeder. And a couple that looked like double yolkers. But after I collect this evening I will probably have at least 6 more than fit in my turner. Things have come a long way since last spring when I was pressing it to collect a dozen at a time for hatching. I might squeeze the extras in on the side and tilt the bator. There are bound to be a few that get pulled at candling next week and then I could squeeze the extras in the turner. I really hope I can find buyers for these babies before it gets warm. If the hatch rate is good, I won't have brooder space for them all until it is warm enough here for them to go in the coop.
