6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

I wish I had of seen this earlier!!
I put eggs in very late on the tenth because they were posted and needed to go in ASAP.... (but I don't expect them to hatch until the 1st, as I had to transport the incubator all the way home without power a few days later and then it ran on the cool side when we were back.)
Good luck to all with your hatches, I shall watch from the sidelines :D

Last night I decided to candle a couple eggs. Or a few. I saw where the blood was starting to develop in a few I had checked from the edge of the incubator (still air). Those were light, cream color bantam eggs. Then I figured I would check just one or 2 of the lab Am bantam eggs. Grabbed one from the middle of the bator. WAY more development in that one. Making it so visually clear why I need to be moving the eggs adding the incubator to different spots. Even though I had moved the eggs one before, that lavender am egg had been more in the middle since the start. So maybe I will move them every day. And since I have a good reason I don't have to feel guilty about messing with the incubator every day! :D

And when you wake up, you get to start all over again!  :lau
LOL that's how I feel

I think it just took me 30 min to catch up with everything. Sheesh.
If only I could quit my day job and be on here 24/7
Yes, that would make it much easier to keep up!

Yes. As the chick grows it will become the lighter space in the egg.
Most unique type of bird or most unique mix?
that makes sense ig. As the chick develops, it kinda trades color with the air sac. Interesting

soo say you over humidify your eggs  and the air cell was to small would you spritz them to help the air cell?

That sounds like it would work. Never hatched duck eggs (or any eggs actually) before, so don't take my word for it.

confused your incubator is working fine but dont want to do winter hatch again?
I believe he said he doesn't think he'll ever wait on warmer months again. As in warmer months temps tend to fluctuate more(so I've heard)

A racoon or something got to one of my Polish frizzle pullets last night. :hit I was out until after 10:30 pm and the coop door was still open. I'm so sad. I hatched her from my first attempt at incubating. She was my sweetie! She would run over so I could pick her up for hugs. :hit I know that this sort of thing happens when you own chickens, but it was my fault for not closing the door before I left. I'm sorry, I don't mean to be a bummer. I'm still super stoked about the hatch. And probably the Easter hatch too. :)

I agree, you most likely can still join in and qualify for the contests also. Im sure Ron will be along soon enough and will give an answer on this.

So sorry to hear that. Its always so hard when we lose one. Its a bummer because often times its the favorite one that gets taken.

I know what u mean, my baby Raven somehow got her wing hurt. She can still fly (flap around) like she did before, but I could see blood and so did the other chickens. They were pecking at her wing, she had feathers coming out too. Could I just be mistaking it for molting? She's about 7 months and so are the others
