jw12 is wanting eggs in tn.Im in Mt Juliet, TN. and getting about a dozen eggs daily if you want a BYM. Ive got an incubator but have been intimidated to try to use it. Just read every post in this thread and I may be about to get brave. Anyway, ive got fertile eggs if any middle tn peeps need some.
Well, he did put a metal roof on the chicken run _before_ this current cold snap for me, so guess I'll have to keep him.Do it and divorce
Yes, I haven't hatched or even been on BYC for several months, got the NYDH email reminder & peeked into the thread knowing full well everyone here would be firmly on the side of SET THE EGGS !!! (Hi Ron, so glad to see you back again this year, lovely first page info to get things going this year too!)LOL you sound like me. I know I shouldn't hatch eggs as last year I went way overboard with the amount I was hatching. It was a little crazy. I promised DH I wouldn't hatch until the Easter Hatch-a-long. But of course following along with you all and reading what everyone has planned and all this talk about eggs has me with a little less will power than I before this thread started lol.
I shouldn't hatch eggs, I shouldn't hatch eggs, I shouldn't hatch eggs... Ill keep telling myself that. DH definitely will not be happy if I start hatching this soon again.![]()
Figures, I have 4 very well feed lovely looking extra cockerals that were scheduled to be my winter laying pullets (plus 3 Roos I actually want). If you or anyone needs a great looking well behaved mutt boy chicken asap to make hatching eggs for NYDH just pm me, I got spares ready willing & able ; / (They are basically mutts F3 EE mixed w/ Orp, or Marran, or SFH all I hatched here from green eggs and heading to freezer camp sooner or later so I can keep just the 3 SFH Roos over the flock).I'm in east TN and my hens are still laying like crazy, but lol I have no roo so it does no good for the hatch along
Lol. Im pretty sure our fearless leader has christmas lights inside his coop

Question -- I have a few hens who finished their molt ages ago & really I think should have started again but are holding out for spring, I've never done the add light trick, but my current coop is in extension cord range of the house. Anyone have first hand experience to know, if I did add light now (a) would it work in time for eggs to set Dec 11 & (b) would I be committed to extra light all winter or could I just do it to get some eggs now then stop w/o hurting the flock?
Thanks and welcome!
Lights start working in a week or so.
Nutrena sells a feather fixer that helps hens get over molting and start laying eggs sooner.
You can also try giving them some red pepper flakes. Mix a couple of table spoons into their feed each day.
