6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

I just pulled out 15 of original 68 eggs. (Fully recharged flashlight shed some real light on the situation tonight!) Now there are still a few dark ones w/ ? things going on inside, & a couple others I'm going to re-check day10 b/c I'm hoping they aren't BR already. Overall I'm pleasantly surpized so many of the really OLD eggs are actually still in the bator, about 3 doz. what I'm not so happy about is that _several_ of the ones I pulled were my own fresh eggs w/ Blood Rings? not too happy about that & not sure what is going on...will be changing out the hay in the nest boxes first thing in the am tomorrow b/c I really don't like that any of those fresh eggs of mine were apparently "not so fresh" : ( yikes!! & those decoy eggs (golf balls) those are going for a bleach bath. ORIGINAL EGGS PIC: Interestingly there is no pattern to the bad eggs in re: placement in bator, so w/ tilting & switching the upper level eggs 3x the heat appears to be reasonably even in the ancient still air LG.
Gorgeous eggs!:love

Here is the picture of the damaged egg. I candled it and it does have veins . What do I do? What do I do? :( Will nail polish fix this?
I had an egg look just like this, a broody stepped on her egg. I used melted plain unscented white candle wax. Not poured directly on but smoothed on with my finger. I put it in the incubator and it hatched just fine.
Wow! This is impressive. :bow @Bama, fingernails make you queasy but not homemade tobacco?

Thanks! It was about 2weeks into developing when she broke the egg. I have used candle wax a few times and each time the egg has hatched. This Silkie egg i posted above was the worst cracked egg I have had yet. I swear by candle wax, its the super glue of the incubating egg world.

@ronott1

Just out of curiosity, how did you pick the random post?

Did you;

  1. Wait until a certain day then do a random drawing of the total posts or;
  2. Choose a random number between 1 and a hoped for total posts or;
  3. Some other method?

Michaelf chose the post number.

When I chose, I used a random number generator to pick a number within a range. There is also a second number picked in case the winner declines.

Totally didn't realize you had announced the winner in that post!

Well, I never said I was the brightest flashlight in the candler

Down to only one egg in the HAL. I'm not surprised, since I only started with two, and we had a power outage, but still a bit disappointing

The eggs are white shelled--last time I hatched them they were Leghorns.
Wait, you hatched the same eggs more than once??? Do you keep re-hatching them until you get a specific breed?
LOL

We have goats too. Will see the firsr week of Jan if the heats are over....fingers crossed the bucks will stop peeing on themselves.
i still have one doe in heat and the 4 bucks are acting like lunatics and the one nigerian buck smells so soo bad, almost like a skunk at this point. The other 3 busk still just smell musky. We have babies that should be dropping in the next month and some due for febuary i believe and then a couple for march, hard to keep track of with 20+ goats.
The winner of the number of eggs set contest is:

@michaelf with a guess of 2247.

2360 eggs were reported as being set for the hatch a long.
i didnt know we were suppose to guess....where am i missing this stuff?
