6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Well my husband agreed. I guess I will invest in a few Welsummers, just in case. LOL!

You know I read that article a while back & I don't really see Welsummers as the best ZA breed. My understanding is (at least the current stock available) doesn't really lay all that well. Anyone w/ Welsummers care to give your opinion on them vs other breeds?

Or anybody want to put forward a breed they raise as a better choice?

Personally the F2 mutt EE birds I've got have been the best layers (most eggs / week, best when hatched at the right time to lay over winter), they free range ok (which might not be the best for Zombie situation ??) , & come to think of it the OE have really long noisyegg songs. hum.

Well, I've got 3 F3 mutt cockerals that I just pulled out of the flock b/c they were starting to bother the girls, but they appear to be good meaty boys so I've got 1 w/ a SpeSux hen who weighs as much as my Bourbon Red Turkey hens did so I intend to see what I got from that cross just for fun, and maybe in case of Zombies ;/

I guess I should state, Breeds I've had so far (many just 1-3 birds)
H.SQ -- Barred Rock, Buckeye
hatchery -- Buff.Orp, Astrolorp
breeder stock/ BYC fanciers stock -- Marans, Ame, OE(actual MaranxAme) , Spec Sux, CCL, SFH
BYM -- mystery mutts & EE mutts (rose comb & blue-green eggs)

Meanwhile, its been raining for most of the past 24 hrs, in theory my early batch would be in lock down w/ added water now, but the fact is the air is thick w/ moisture & those air cells are just barely big enough looking, so no water added, just waiting for an internal pip to take any action, expecting that late wed-Friday...more likely towards fri for most of the eggs...

In case of Zombie apocalypse i would want australorps. They have not even blinked with their egg production this winter. Their only risk factor is they would probably be friendly to zombies too.
I am really excited for your hatch feyraine!

I have a lot of mutts too. Just wanted to thicken the blood line in my flock for better health. Thanks for the advice!
