6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Bare backed hens, we call them ...easy...

because they don't run, they squat for the roo. I've seen roos chase some and give up.

Yeah, we've definitely had hens "play hard to get" but unfortunately, but it's when they do get got that it gets bad.
My adopted Copper Marans just resumed laying a few weeks ago and my incubator showed up a day early, so I am going to give this a shot.
I'll be setting 7 of these.

Have you hatched chocolate eggs before? How difficult is it to candle them? I have a hard enough time candling non-chocolate brown eggs. What size bulb do you use to candle?
Cant set any eggs in my bator for new years since its already in use for my christmas hatch, but i think its close enough for me to still say im a part of new years

theyre due to hatch on the 26th.
Time to get a second incubator, perhaps? *cough*enabling*cough*

The breeders are not laying well yet. The Arkansas blues are young and the Partridge Penedesencas are on strike!

I really hope that the Blue australorp eggs get here!
I thought Australorps only came in black. I get 50% of your chicks...umm...because I called dibs!

Edit: had an oops that needed un-oops-ed. lol

Chocolate eggs are very hard to candle. A good candler will usually show the air cell though.

Look for darkness in the egg as it develops. A glowing egg is a bad egg.

Oh and to add, they do come in blue too. I have one blue pullet and may have a couple of blue roosters but I have not been out to check on them.

Ron! You rock.

So speaking of air cells. I have some BLRW in the bator now - one has it's air cell on the side, weird, huh? These were not shipped eggs.
Tilt the egg in an egg carton so that the air cell is up a bit on the big end.

The chick will usually pip in the top center there. You need to do that because you can see how bad it would be for the chick to hit one of those very healthy looking veins.

A variation of:

See where they are pipping?

Grrr, very frustrated...apparently my 2 day priority from AR is going to take 5 days to get here?! No wonder the USPS is going out of business for lack of use.

My eggs shipped today and I tracked them...they are saying delivery on Friday, the 12th, right next to 2 Day Priority. Who taught them how to count? I'm officially pouting!

Don't worry...yet. The tracking isn't always kept up. You may get a special delivery before you expect it. Happens often.

My eggs r here!!! Whoop whoop! Cant stand the wait...I swear the last twodays r the hardest. Beautiful and cute pics everyone. So jealous I dont have room to hatch more eggs...I will be setting 8. Have a great day all.

Well, I can add to the real shock of opening ... eggs got shook up. This was the first part of the yr.

Box within a box..hey, that's great, but something didn't smell right..literally.

And now I see why!

In all of the yrs. that I've hatched, I had never seen anything like this. This was not done by an occasional bad handler. Someone had to have shaken or kicked,,or did both to this package. I cleaned a few that weren't broken...few..with water very carefully. I actually got two chicks from this box.

Okay, done my day 7 candle right now and 8 eggs out of 33 seem a little odd!!! LOL...sorry if I have posted somewhere else that I have 36...it is only 33...

The rest of the eggs are doing well and have got little chicks inside them!!!
