6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Which thermometer is the most accurate for temperature range.

All of the temperatures are within safe incubating range or plus or minus one degree from 99.5. I would leave it at the current setting and see how the hatch goes. If they hatch close to on time and are healthy, then the temps are fine.

Humidity should work too. You can calibrate the hybrometers by putting them on the front porch and using intellicast to see what the humidity is at your house. That should be close enough for hatching eggs.

Thank you! I didn't think of that for calibrating the hygrometer. The room the bator is in is full of fish tanks so the humidity can get quite high in there. I have the vents closed for now but i get the feeling I won't need to add much if any water during lockdown when they are open. I'm going to move the thermometers out from under the heating element to the sides of the bator. If it is notably cooler at the edges should I turn it up a bit? Its still air and currently set to 99.5.

Ron, is there anything that you don't know about hatching eggs? You seem to have an answer for every question! If you don't mind answering, how long have you been incubating?

And thanks for the info about the Blue Australorps but I guess my "dibs" on half your chicks is a no-go? lol
I have been hatching for five years--several of those years have been for 9 months straight each year.

I have also been researching and helping folks via PMs and email.

If I lived closer to you I would likely share. I do share with BYC members in Norther California. I hatch for them too.

So I didn't think they would hatch but I got 2 quail and one pending. I also have my incubator getting ready on the right temp. Anyone know a good temp to keep it at? I have spared out on what temp, need reassurance.

I was thinking of hatching 8 (or more) eggs for the hatch-a-long, but am not quite sure how many I will have. It seems that three of my chickens have made the wise and timely decision to molt in the middle of winter, and are no longer laying. All three of those chickens are the ones I wanted eggs from. The other 4 hens, in a sympathy strike or something, have decided to lay about half as many eggs as usual, so we are down to 1.5 eggs per day now. However, either with 1.5 or 8 eggs, I am looking forward to starting on the 11th!

Maybe will respond to the pretty Christmas lights I put around their house.

She is a sweet heart too!

They are from hupp farm in Arizona. Sadly he does not ship egg any more--only local pickup. Due to eggs getting destroyed like yours.

The shipper needs to get the $50.00 insurance money on that one.
She is sooooooo pretty. How much difference in the color of the Blue's and the Lavender's. I'm supposed to have some in the spring.

Lavendar often looks the same but has a different base color.

It gets confusing since the genetics are just a bit different too.

The Hupp Australorps are amazing! You are lucky to be close enough to get some.
