Super cute

My shipped eggs are all coming on Friday too! :(

Also, I am the worst sister ever!

My little sister got an incubator and I told her I would send eggs from my chickens to her to hatch. I was supposed to mail yesterday and didn't get to it in time. Well here I am waiting for a tow truck and post office closes in 20 minutes..... so tomorrow it is. Her eggs will now be late too!

I just got a notice that me eggs will be shipped tomorrow too!

I will be setting late but that is fine!

I have been hatching for five years--several of those years have been for 9 months straight each year.

I have also been researching and helping folks via PMs and email.

If I lived closer to you I would likely share. I do share with BYC members in Norther California. I hatch for them too.
Well, it's obviously been 5 years well spent! It's no wonder you're a Guru.

I was just joking about the dibs on the chicks though.

I am planning to start culling our flock in the spring, selling these chicks and ordering some Black Australorps. I think I am in love with the breed. They are so beautiful.

Fun! Wish I could do it but in my area it is SO cold on New Years so I can't have brand new baby chicks :( But sounds like fun. Enjoy!
If you don't mind me asking, where are you in the Boondocks? I'm there too...somewhere. lol

I've never incubated eggs before, and only set eggs under a broody once, but I'm going to join in and give it a shot.
If you go to page 114 of this thread, I posted a downloadable incubating record sheet that should help you keep things straight.

Edit:

Had to un-oops an oops.

Well, I can add to the real shock of opening ... eggs got shook up. This was the first part of the yr.

Box within a box..hey, that's great, but something didn't smell right..literally.

And now I see why!

In all of the yrs. that I've hatched, I had never seen anything like this. This was not done by an occasional bad handler. Someone had to have shaken or kicked,,or did both to this package. I cleaned a few that weren't broken...few..with water very carefully. I actually got two chicks from this box.
Holy egg yolk batman!! Someone abused the heck outta that box!

I am ill just looking at that! What a waste of eggs and resources. :( I'm happy you were able to salvage two babies.

I can only hope this was made right for you! I bet you didn't remember ordering your eggs scrambled!

Well, I've finally caught up on reading everything. I've been sick and not on the computer much at all. So I fell pretty far behind. I was beginning to think I'd have nothing but my own eggs to put in the incubator. I lost an auction for 10 LOs. Then I lost another auction for 24 SFH. I was feeling pretty dispirited, but thought I'd look one more time even though I knew there wouldn't be any more ending in time. Lo and behold! There was an auction for 10 SFH that was only put on for a few hours, and from a seller I've been wanting to try out too! I made darn sure I didn't lose that one!

They shipped this morning, but the seller is in Oklahoma, so not too far from me. So hopefully they'll make it in time to be set on the 11th. Haven't counted how many of my own LO and SFH I've collected.

I put my two LO hens and the rooster I want chicks from right now in a separate breeding pen to find out once and for all exactly which eggs are theirs. They are still laying bantam sized eggs!!!

Is this normal for orpingtons who will be a year old on NYD? The eggs are also strange. The shells often have small creases or wrinkles and the insides are weird. The yolks are normal, but the white are about half gelatinous mass around the yolk and half thin and runny like water. Do you think there is any chance these could hatch, and does anyone have any ideas what would cause this?

I'll try to get pics of the shells in a bit and post them up.
