6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

I got my eggs today! This is what one of the boxes looked like:

Sheesh! The eggs were all okay thanks to some excellent packaging, but still sheesh.

Wow I would be so angry if I received a box in that shape. Thank goodness the eggs all made it through that rough travel. Beautifully colored eggs!!! I hope they hatch well.

I'm in Mon county outside of Morgantown.  How about you?  Yeah, the breeds I've listed will be the ones hatching with one exception.  They all have a Black Australorp daddy.  We call him Big Daddy Crow :yiipchick because of all the roosters we've had, his is definitely the biggest, deepest crow I've heard.

That's disgusting!  It just goes to show there is no such thing as "pride in one's job" anymore...well in most places.  I'm glad the eggs survived!  Hope you get a good hatch out of them!
I'm close to the Putnam and Kanawha County line, near Charleston. That's cool! I have a blue Andalusian hen (she's actually entirely black) I named her Raven bc she looks just like a raven (with the exception of a really dark red comb& wattle) She has the blue-green shine to her just like a raven. But I am confused, did u mean the breeds that you listed will all be crosses with the black Australorp roo?? For example: RIR chicks will actually be a RIR/black Australorp mix?

I candled my 19 duck eggs I set last week and..... All are going strong so far!

Next step...... Getting the 2 dozen RIR eggs set in the morning I just went and picked up! Everyone in the house is excited.

700

Our lineup :D Buff Orpington, Rhode Island Red, white cochin, Cochin mix.

Humidity less than 50%ish is considered a dry hatch. That is the traditional humidity level.

It is not recommended to hatch at less than 25% so depending on where one lives and the humidity level, water would need to be added. I incubat at 35% for the first 18 days and then 60 to 70% for hatching.

Interesting! I thought a "dry hatch" literally meant no water in the incubator. Shows how much I know! :3

I think our humidity here never drops below 80%. Hooray Houston, haha!

Now that's not to say the humidity in my HOUSE never goes below 80%... Or is that moot, since my house is drawing in air from the outside?

I put water in for the quail, I will do the same thing for the chickens, and add a bit more for hatching. It's a little bit of a guessing game without a humidity reader. :/

Thank you, @ronott1 !

Well, the RIR, BPR, Ameraucana, Ameraucana/RIR and Ameraucanas/BPR are all grown but we recently had a Black Australorp given to us by our neighbor and he's the only mature rooster that the hens would tolerate. Our cockerels are Ameraucana crosses with RIR and BPR and have just reached puberty. We're going to sell all of them. The chicks are will be BA/RIR, BA/BPR and BA/Ameraucana mixes.

Before we got our BA, we had 2 Ameraucana brothers who tended the hens but when we got the opportunity to get the BA, we had to butcher them before we could introduce him into the flock. The brothers weren't very good at ruling the flock as the hens usually ignored them. But this BA, well there's no doubt he's charmed his ladies. lol He doesn't even have to bribe them by finding treats. He just walks over, does his dance and they say "go on, Big Daddy Crow, I'm all yours." LOL

Btw, all of our crosses from the Ameraucana brothers look like Ameraucanas, except 2 roosters which are a lighter colored red than the RIR and have the frames of a game bird. They are very pretty but not very meaty.

And I'm not sure what the official meaning of BPR is but mine are Barred Plymouth Rocks.

So in on time will be:

6 Marans Eggs
12 Silkie/Sizzle Eggs

And 2 days late will be:
8 Barnevelder

(maybe more if I put mixed eggs in....)
