can i just say I LOVE all the holiday avi's, I would love one if you have time!
We put all the new eggs in tonight and eggtopsied the old eggs. There wasn't anything going on in them. Two of them had something little spots like a pea that were milky white, kinda squishy/solid. but nothing else.
eagerly awaiting ducklings! and then hopefully a few days later we will have MOAR chicks.
Finally caught up-again. Work is really getting in the way.
Do we candle on day 7 or 8? I don't want to cheat, but I'm getting a bit curious. I pulled a few eggs from the fridge, too. I think my fridge is too cold, but we'll see. Those are the ones I'm most curious about.
I had an egg explode seconds after I had been holding it to my ear to see if I could hear any cheeping. I had bagged it and placed it down into the trash, then gone back to do something before taking the trash out. I had been wondering if they really explode. Now I know.
Night all. Go to bed so I don't have another 150 posts to read in the morning.
I owe you money bama... Eggs are doin good 1 dud almost looks like the yoke is broken... 3 I can't tell, and the rest are doing good.
I wait until at least day 10 to toss clears. Dark eggs I leave unless they stink. So, if it looks clear at 7 days should i take it out and throw it away now or wait?
I keep smelling my eggs cause some of them are dark. Glad no one has seen me sniffing my eggs! When does water candling work? That seems like it would work better than my nose.
Thanx!http://kigurumi-shop.com/Chicken-Kigurumi.aspx this is where they come from. There are tons of different ones! Ive seen a black chicken as a promo on amazon as well! They are the most comfyiest!
Ok no problemo! Ill try and upload one![]()
Good luck with that!Im not going to open my bator till dec 30....i dont care...
What Ron said. As Always! No, wait for day 10 to 14 and only toss them if they are eggs you can see into. Dark shelled eggs stay in unless the smell bad.
Yes! Sometimes eggs that look like they have a blood ring will be good a couple of days later.
I candle every night. But I figure it is the same as the cool down mode on the new incubators.
Never has been detrimental to any of my hatches. I don't ever handle the eggs, always shining the light down through the tops. The Brinsea OvaView candler is so bright it lights up the eggs beautifully. Even the Marans eggs.![]()
So far all 6 of the golden cuckoo Marans eggs are growing. Of the 8 Silkie eggs, one went missing, one had a blood ring and one quit (bad first time broody) so down to 5 growing.
Caskets...Really?! ...Nevermind, I don't want to know.Candling: go to walmart....get the ozark trail OT-250L flashlight..it will candle golf balls, bowling balls, red bricks, cinder blocks, caskets...seriously...this flashlight will candle anything...if it wont...(but it will)..save ur receipt for a refund (u wont need it).
Very nice! This is my broody "apartment" under the poop board. I built it after the chicks hatched (in my garage) so not much help with the "when".Nice set up for the broody hens and babies you got there. Indie is adorable! I just love roosters. May be why I have so many.
I don't remember if I posted the picture of our broody girls on her in their box so here goes.
They have a lot of room in there. The re-purposed table/nest box sits in the corner of the barn coop in an 8 x 10 area. It is located under the poop board that is under the roost. I was planning to use some hardware cloth to fence a small area in for the 2 mamas and their chicks so that the others can't get to them but can see them. I want them all to be used to each other. Do you think I should go ahead and section the area off now or wait until closer to hatching? I don't want to upset the mom's. I guess I could section it off but leave a door open for their breaks in the sun. What do you think?
for my personal records, I don't count clears towards my total; only those that start developing.Okay 11 clear eggs and 1 blood ring out of the bator. So 20 eggs still in the running with 3 = " ? " 1 being a cracked one that was repaired.
Now for the hatch rate (not for HAL contest), do we throw out the clear eggs and count what hatches out of fertile eggs (for our own records) ? I think for contest it's based on how many set to how many hatches.
Night!night all!![]()

I have probably read this... And have forgotten totally in all my hatching "newbieness" Thanks for the great info ronDay 7, 14 and 18 are the days for air cell development. Shipped eggs should not be handled much for the first 7 days since they need to recover from shipping damage. After day 7, candle every day if you want to but remember, the more you handle them the more the chance you may drop one. Thee is a risk of dropping something on the even if the eggs are candled from the top. Especially with a bird suit on....or what every the attire of choice is.... Hatch rates are better if the eggs are not candled too much during the first week.![]()
I'm not going to candle,
I'm not going to candle,
I'm not going to candle,
Who am I kidding, 7/7 in the incubator showing signs of development.
