6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Here is the picture of the damaged egg. I candled it and it does have veins
.

What do I do? What do I do?

Will nail polish fix this?

My vote is to scotch tape length wise then finger nail hardner on all tape seams for support since (if I understand correctly) its under a broody.

Candled and tossed 4 very clear non-starters. Pretty high fertility for this time of year and chilly weather. There were a few I wasn't entirely sure on, but I left them. I always pencil sketch the air sac edge onto the shell so I can be sure they are progressing correctly next time I candle. Anyone else do that?

that leaves 38 eggs in the bator and only 6 chicks spoken for out of this first hatch. :sick. DH is being quite the enabler. He keep telling me to set more eggs. I had to remind him that the turner is full. I told him that to continuous hatch I'd need a dedicated hatcher. Now he wants to make one. Pretty sure that will end up being this weekend's project so I can get it up and running and test how well it holds humidity and temp. If it holds well, I might hatch port of my HAL eggs in there - not all of them though - just in case.

I'm thinking of of taking a a big thick styro cooler like they use to ship fish to pet stores and a 150 watt rough service bulb and some hardware cloth to make the thing. I kinda want to get a dollar store photo frame to make a window in the top cause I just gotta be able to see what is going on during hatching. Pretty sure I can make it for next to free with mostly stuff we already have. Anyone got any good tips who have built one?
I'd like to see this question answered too

Finally caught up!!

Happy birthday @Book!!

After all the chatter in here about candling, I did mine tonight. Glad I did.
Don't ask what I was (or wasn't) wearing, you likely don't want to know

The iPhone camera worked beautifully!! Much better on the dark eggs than my LED torch (except a few that were still too dark).
Pulled 4 blood rings, left in a few questionables that aren't obvious risks and was happy to see veining and progress in 15 eggs, some even moved!!
I know Ron suggested leaving eggs in until they smell or leak, but I can't risk this hatch for the sake of a few eggs (which were obvious blood rings).

I'm incubating Barnevelder eggs that were posted across the country and not a cheap loss if I lose them all to an exploding egg. I started with 34 set, but pulled out 11 weepers in the first few days. I'm happy with seeing 15 definitely progressing, possibly more, because my last lot of Barnevelder's set had so many infertiles.

Only two weeks to go!!

Congrats, my fingers are crossed that the remaining eggs all hatch!!

u are sharing info at a level 7....we need u more around a level 4. But thanks for making me vomit just enough to burn my throat and make my beer taste funny

Come now my info can't be as bad as someone drumming up images of various candling outfits.

That said, I'll keep my goat info a secret for a while.

Now now people, let's not get prudish. If we as a society can accept and even encourage sexualisation of women for advertising purposes (which I certainly am not saying I personally agree with, far from it), then why not accept the truth of sex in the animal kingdom, or dressing up as chickens... or down into natural states for candling. ;)
Speedo's however, totally offensive on every level :p

That being said, I have to admit that I was grossed out by seeing my goat with his urine fetish, but do find a goat on heat hilarious, in general. Funny creatures, are goats.

BAHAHAHAHA. Good idea, as I usually refuse to get dressed for unannounced visitors. I find it deters unwanted's from surprising me unannounced.
Alas, maybe not so after this morning's adventures!! I decided to refill the bee's water bucket in my usual summer attire and ended up with a couple bee stings for my effort, from the (rather unusually) annoyed bees today. One sting was in a rather ummmm, personal spot. I think I might buy myself some clothing this summer. :/

The winner of the number of eggs set contest is:

@michaelf
 with a guess of 2247.

2360 eggs were reported as being set for the hatch a long.

Good guessing Michaelf, congrats :)

I candled and only one egg is developing! AHHH!!!! What do I do???? I've never raised a lone chick before. Anyone wanna sell me a few chicks to keep my loner company?!?!?!?!

Hope it's voted the cutest chick, so it can have a needle felted friend to keep it company :D

We have 25 eggs with babies growing :D

Woohoo, congrats!

Well, that only took a couple hours to catch up on! Lucky you are all in bed asleep when I have to catch up, or I'd be seeing the page numbers rise as I read haha.

Is anybody else a little more excited for NY now, rather than Xmas??
I usually dislike New Years (and my birthday.... Just more reminders that time is moving on and ticking by, leaving me older and feeling less accomplished as the days go by LOL).
This is a much better way to ring in the new year!! :weee

Nothing wrong with cheating. It was just my personal goal to wait. Plus, I've been really busy. My alarm didn't go off this morning and I overslept an hour and a half. I'm only on here because I'm eating breakfast. Just had 2 cancellations due to the rain! My day got easier.

I just started incubating this year, so exploding eggs was a new concept for me. It didn't sweat or seep and didn't have much of a smell. Since it was under a turkey for who knows how long, I wasn't sure if it was smelling from rott or poo.

Yes! That's a Shiba Inu. That's Quick. He's my 3rd Shiba and #4 is in training (although she may never be reliable enough to trial). I'll brag on Quick. He has his ADCH and was 2 QQ from his MACH when I retired him (his choice). He's now 2 Chances Q's from his NATCH, but at almost 12 years, he's decided to run agility his way, so I doubt we'll get it. Plus, those elite chances are so hard and we don't get to play NADAC too much. Sorry you asked? I love talking about Quick and all my dogs. Post a pic of your Shiba.

Great photo of your Shiba Inu!!! I used to do agility with my sheltie...absolutely love agility. She is 13 now so no trials in her future, but she still runs a small course or two in the back yard.
