6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

@ronott1 Someone mentioned contest judging in a recent post, and I realize I hadn't though to ask how the contests work when the juding is done by vote. Are those open to only HAL participants or to everyone on BYC who wants to vote? Is the voting done openly in the forum, or are the votes PM'd to the contest sponsor to tally? Also, for the ones that require pics, it looks like the pics are posted directly in this thread?

Thanks!
Gina

The voting is open to BYC members--I use a survey and from from Google docs. The pictures will be posted in a thread--the form will be in the first post.

So, if it looks clear at 7 days should i take it out and throw it away now or wait?
I keep smelling my eggs cause some of them are dark. Glad no one has seen me sniffing my eggs! When does water candling work? That seems like it would work better than my nose.
Water candling is done after day 15. And it isn't super reliable. I heard someone say they had an egg sink, and it still hatched. I do it just for fun! If it's hard to see through the shell, you may want to leave it for now. I have a few that have "shadows" that I've left in. If it's obviously clear, then there is nothing developing.

Nope, She laid them and then sat on them.. I didn't even know about this HAL and she just so happened to start sitting on her clutch the exact day she was supposed to for the HAL, so I joined. That sounds like an informative thing to compare!

Ok so your Homegrown eggs under a Broody compared to my shipped eggs in a bator. Maybe i should start a thread for it?

NOT GOOD!
Most of the eggs seem to have gone to mush inside, can't see the veins anymore. I think it is because humidity was too high for when I was hatching the other eggs. :( Not sure I will get any HAL eggs to hatch. I messed up guys. :( With non-toxic marker I put sad faces on all the eggs that don't look good.

I like the faces! I'm going to start doing that. I was using some code letters, and dates, but I like this much better. Sorry about the losses! All of my Silkie eggs were doing fine, then three of them just gave up. I don't know what happened. I'm doing semi-dry with humidity at 45%. I did dry, dry hatching last time, and it did not go well.

The Blue Australorp eggs have 8 of 11 with veins and they were shipped!

What type of eggs were they selling? white, brown, rainbow?

They are white eggs--should be white leghorns. They may sell eggs from different breeds in other parts of the country--Some have hatched chicks that look like austra whites.

Here is a list of what I have set:
30 Easter Eggers
34 Naked Neck (some will not be NN b/c of gene)
20 Green Egger Naked Necks
9 cross breed
11 black/blue Copper Marans
4 Marans x Crested Easter Egger for Crested Olive Eggers. These four eggs are from only 1 hen that was collected for 5 days.
Wow!!!!!!!!!!! impressive!!!!!!
