6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

OK, forgive the newbie question, but this cool down period, do you have to do that? Could this be why my eggs in the incubator previously did not develop? We have new eggs in there we started two days ago, if this is necisary on all hatches, when do you start it? right at day one, or what day? Thank you so much!!! this is in a still air with no turners. we are opening it three times per day to turn eggs, so does that count as the cool down period?

Yes @houdiniduck I'm just trying it to see if I get better luck.. Just something different to do. Since I switched from hatching ducks to chicks, my luck has been circling the toilet.

The cool down cycle helps with hatching, not developing. It sounds like the eggs were not fertile or there was a temperature spike in the first three days. Still air incubators biggest challenge is getting and keeping the temperature at the correct level.
It's not necessary to do the cooldown. It starts at day eight I don't remember how long or what temperatures Ron said and it will on average get one more chick to hatch
From day 8 to lock down.

Whew, finally caught up again!!

I am going to be candling my eggs soon, just waiting for it to get a bit darker. I candled 1 egg the other night and saw veins, but I will do all 8 of them now. I'm so nervous!! Fingers crossed.

My minds telling me no
But my body's telling me yes baby
I dont wanna hurt nobody
But there is something that I must confess,
To yall....
I dont see nothing wrong...
With a little early candling
(R. Kelly) ...kinda

My daughter had this as an assigned experiment for her science. It has been weeks. And the eggs are still in the vinegar, still retaining a thin layer of shell. I bet it works on a thin shelled egg. But not ones from our hens. Nice thick shells from these girls.

She talked with her teacher and instead watched YouTube videos about the remainder of the experiment to finish her report. Lol

At about 2:40, she talks about the vinegar then, later on, she shows how easy it is to "peel" the eggs when they're done. There is still a thin peeling on the egg after the vinegar soak but it just rubs off with your thumb.

Luckily your trailer park is no where near my house......
i shall watch for you on the news, please wear red so we know it is you.
