6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Why are people trying to hatch Trader Joe's eggs? Is it to get leghorns?

There's a whole "Trader Joe's Eggs Hatching Club" thread on BYC. Why? Because it's a challenge. Because they're there. I don't think it's specifically to get leghorns, but it's an inexpensive way to get fertile eggs for hatching..... $2.99/doz

I am amazed!

16 of 24 Trader Joes Fertile eggs are developing--I spent $2.99 a dozen for those eggs! The expiration day on them was 12-31--It should have been a hatch date on the carton!

The Blue Australorp eggs have 8 of 11 with veins and they were shipped!

What type of eggs were they selling? white, brown, rainbow?

Okay, somebody posted a video that showed the development of the chicken embryo but I can't remember who it was. I think it may have been Cynthia but don't quote me on that.

Anyway, here is the video they posted:

I said that I had the whole video bookmarked somewhere and I would try to find it. Well, it appears that in my mind, I had combined the above video with this one:

http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q...&mid=150EC2999E782C6FD961150EC2999E782C6FD961

Because I could not find a different version of the above videos anywhere in my bookmarks.

I think the trader joe eggs are kinda like a wrapped christmas pressie you get a surprise in each egg curiosity to see what kind of bird might come out also economical and sure a challenge for some ppl to hatch, I would also think it would be a nice way to try incubating and get experience without throwing huge somes of money away if you fail

Trader Joes does sell fertile eggs and they can be hatched!

I am hatching two dozen for the hatch a long. I set a dozen a couple of years ago and hatched three eggs from that dozen.

I have 16 with veins out of 24. I have had worse development from shipped eggs before.

It will be fun seeing what hatches.

I did the 1st time because I didn't want to spend $$$$ on hatching eggs my first try at incubating. I hatched 1 out of 12. The 2nd time was just for fun...and at $2.99/doz whats to lose? (ETA: 2nd try was 11/12!)

Yep, in the fridge isle with the rest of the eggs. I guess not all TJs carry fertile eggs though. Look for this carton:

Oops, don't have pic of the top...but it's green. (ETA: this was my first hatch)
