6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

I had to remove 9/14 Silkie eggs out of my shipped egg clutch because there were absolutely no signs of development in any of them.

The Black Copper Maran and Welsummer eggs are still too dark to candle, but I am crossing my fingers for them!

On a positive note, all ten of the bantam eggs that I set on the 15th are developing! =)

It is frustrating!!! the down side to incubating......

I'm not doing well for this HAL. Of my 24 eggs set I just pulled 15 clears and one blood ring. Eggtopsy showed I was right on the clears and the blood ring one had a start but stopped before veining. Of the 8 left 2 are perfect at this point. The other 6 have mass but hard to see into. Keeping my fingers crossed. Should I add a water bottle or two to help stabilize the temps with so little eggs in there?

I feel your pain...especially with shipped eggs. =(

They were from my flock :-( I think my rooster (aka Rocky) is not doing his job. I have seen him tend my new layers as well as the rest of his hens. He is 5 years old I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. Last year I did 3 hatches from my flock to supply my neighbor and a friend with chicks and all but 1 or 2 of the eggs were fertile. I bought 6 Buff Orpingtons in the early spring so he has 15 hens to tend. I tried to bring a new roo into the mix but Rocky won't allow another male to be in the flock. I think it's time to send him to freezer camp. Looks like shipped eggs for the Easter HAL is gonna be my best bet.

For a 5 year old rooster I think that is way too many hens. He'd need some Viagra for (rooster booster) chickens and I still think that way too many. I have ran 12-13 hens for 1-2 year old roosters.

The fins and tail have only skin and bone bamadude up to no good tax $200.00

When I was about 10 my cousins came over & we caught a mess of bluegill & they insisted on frying up the fins & tails & eating them saying they were like potato chips.
Cleaning the fish was not as bad as trying to eat those, um, fish chips :( .I don't remember if I liked the bluegill. I do know I love catfish & trout (but not if they are looking at you the way my aunt & uncle in CO served them when I was age 4, ugh!!) .

Egg whites, been there, enough said.

@Book
If you go w/ the Prego sauce & you aren't sure he'll get it, you could add a jar of pickles & a coupon for some ice cream at the top of the stocking...& maybe a one shot bottle of his favorite adult beverage under the jar of pasta sauce.

I need to start getting the brooder ready, my early batch is due the 24! , so I guess I need to proceed to lockdown & everything. I'm still kinda dazed since discovering that we are getting 4 horses in a few weeks, 3 of which have heads larger than my body...I mean I like horses & everything but this was rather sudden of the DH... & we have a dairy goat & a pig due in Feb. Yah, this winter livestock thing was not exactly well planned this year.

Bator A (Due Dec24) the New still air LG 9200  so far 45/64

Bator B ( NYD HAL!!!) the ancient still air LG 9200 so far 54/68

I'll only be keeping <25% of whatever hatches myself so that won't be any big deal compared to approx. 7,000 pounds of horses my DH is adding to the farm...

so about that adult beverage...ya'll have a good night & don't overpost ;>

A few weeks is when? I really hope you post pictures of the horses when you get them.

Today was the 7 day candle for me. The TJs eggs are doing awesome! I have 17 out of 24 developing. There were 3 blood rings and 4 clears. Amazing for eggs that came out of the cold shelf in a grocery store!

7 of 11 Blue Australorp eggs are developing too--good for shipped eggs.

Now what am I going to do with these chicks if they hatch well?

You could always send some my way

:highfive: Pigeons!

I hope they both hatch.

After a quick candle this morning, I noticed that some of my chicks are not as far along as others so I decided to put heat them in the microwave for 5 seconds to speed up the process...Not a good idea.
