Red Rooster with silver hen makes a red sexlink. They will have a dark chipmonk pattern for the pullets and a faded pattern for cockerels.

BBS rooster with barred hens make black sex links.

Check the first post in the thread above for more information and examples of breeds that work.

I thought I read somewhere that it was red Roos on a barred hen made black sex-link chicks... I'll take your word for it Ron. You seem to be right about almost everything else so far.

I just tried to tell my DH that I need another incubator. He made some weird noise and rolled his eyes.
So I have my eggs upstairs and am very grateful I work during the day...otherwise I would never leave them alone. I keep wanting to just go stare at them and will them to move.

In the list of breeds used for black sex links, there is a wheaten group that will work. An RIR Rooster over a buff catalona, buff leghorn or a red leghorn will make a black sexlink. Not with barred rocks though and that cross may have some white eggs instead of brown.

It is not commonly used.

Edited to add: I do not know what I was thinking. A Red Rooster(NH or RIR) X Barred rock(or other barred breed) will make a black sex link. The other way, barred rooster x Red pullet will not make a sexlink.

So what would a RIR over a barred hen give you? Just a weird mutt? Lol
