Important question, anyone hear anything about the flu this year? My niece just called and told me that she was in the hospital last night with a fever of 105 degrees! They put her on morphine and wanted to soak her in ice but she refused. She's doing better this morning but I was wondering how bad it is. She said the flu shot isn't working this year either and that it's bad down there in Texas so be careful.

All I've heard is that the virus has already mutated so much that the flu shot isn't effective anymore; they are coming up with a new shot.

I have 8 little fuzzies now with 2 more zipped and just mustering the energy to emerge and join the flock. I was so excited I could hardly sleep last night and now I'm happy that they all seem healthy and vibrant. Beverly is a trooper!











Ha ha, please don't judge my bobo next boxes. I find so much plastic garbage washed up on the beach an I'm obsessed with finding uses for it. This is an old milk crate. Sometimes they are a little broken and need some zip-tying My hens don't mind, though.

Thanks for all of the help and advice on this thread! Especially toward the end when my excitement had me molesting poor Beverly every half hour. I'll look forward to the next hatch-a-long.

ok some peeps have mentioned humidity up and down and shrink wrapping the chicks.............does shrink wrapping happen when the humdity goes up and down? I had thought shrink wrapping happened when you didnt have enough humdity?

You're are correct; shrink wrapping is when the humidity gets to low and the membrane dries out. Opening the bator to often during hatch will tempararely drop the humidity and can cause the fluctuations you are referring (it's the low periods that cause issues with shrink wrapping; to high of humidity can sufficate the chicks)

ok so I have a question see alot of peeps using to bators one to incubate and another to hatch is this for the split setting hatchs? convenience or some other mysterious hatching thingie?

I personally do it for staggered hatching.

You would get a black sex link. Any color rooster that is not white or barred over a barred rock hen yields a black sex link, where the males hatch with a spot on their head and the females don't.

Thanks! I am going to need it! lol! I didn't stay up to make sure the incubator got back up to temp last night, thinking that it would because I'd gotten rid of a lot of the water, but, nope. When I checked this morning it was around 97. I don't know if that's still int the safe range? Humidity is still 77%. I'm not sure what to do at this point. I turned the thermostat up. I think I'll remove the water from the last channel, and use the dish, sponge method.    times 100 ! 

Temp sounds good, but humidity seems a little high. Perhaps you could take some more water out of the channels?
