6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

the white fanny on the black one is hysterical!

Yay for CA Whites! Happy you will be able to add the white layers and remember me when you are wondering what to do with your extra pullets.
Looking forward to seeing the final pics!
I was about to snatch the last three out when I saw a pip on one of the last three eggs!

I bet I will have some extra pullets for you.

Okay. The marans chick has dried off and it's a BLUE! Yay!

However, it is unable to uncurl its neck. Is this wry neck so young? Or is it just crampy from being in the egg so long?

Any advice is welcome.

Does it stand up?

Wry neck will make them not be able to stand.

They need a vitamin with B in it. No Iron though.

Looking closer at the chick, it has a REALLY round and distended lower body....like it just absorbed a huge yolk sac. The movement is like -- oh, you know -- a Weeble. Cannot get its feet under it due to the abdomen. This may just be a function of time for it to absorb.

Yes, sometimes the abdomen is yolk shaped too.
No, it cannot stand. (short answer)
Because of the big belly or the neck throwing off balance.

I would get a vitamin to it and then see how it is in a day.

Does brewers or nutritional yeast work for chickens? works for ducks as a source of B vitamins

Yes, brewers yeast is good.

For most people, it is easier to get poly vi sol without iron. Getting some hatching and poultry medicine together as a kit is a good idea. Nutritional years would be a great thing to have on hand.

Yeah I keep Brewers and nutritional yeast on hand along with some other odds and ends...
Bleed stop, baytril, ACV, tea tree oil...
