6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Quote: I did not mean to imply that you would not be keeping track of your breeding. It was more of a curiosity thing. I was wondering if it took a specific combo of 2 birds or if it was passed in just one of the "parents". I got a cross beak that did not hatch completely. It was from a shipped egg. I thought it had to do with a temp spike. The other birds from that batch of eggs are all sold off by almost a year. But still I was curious.

Sally,
I didn't take it that way really. There was no offence in what you said. Sometimes the words don't go down the way I want them to.

You really had some good observations. And thank you for them.

I sold 10 from my nyd hatch before they started showing their genders, but of the remaining 10 I have at least 2 confirmed Roos. I had to cull one early that just wasn't responding one morning. It fell asleep under the heat lamp and I think it was dehydrated. Would not take nutridrench or water by dropper and these tiny bantams are impossible to tube. Had to cull one for slipped hock last week. I was hoping to correct the weird stance but turned out it was a deformity at the hip causing the leg to be out of joint and was not able to do anything about it.

Hatched my second hatch of the year on Sunday. So far 17 in the brooder and 1 still in the bator. I built a chicken condo for them. I will try to post a photo from my phone. And maybe some of my remaining nyd babies. They are getting really pretty.

This is my chick condo. Up cycled stuff DH doesn't use for his fish hobby anymore. So easy to clean and fun to watch the chicks through the side. These are only 15 gallon long tanks, next is the 55gallon plus stand that will go in the basement. :celebrate

Some snapshots such as I could get them with the iPad of my remaining nyd babies. I will get out the real camera and take photos of them later this week.

Hi everyone, i just wanted to say thank you for letting me follow along on the NY 2015 hatch. You all are SO hysterically funny, so i laughed a lot and learnt a lot. I ordered eggs so should have a valentines hatch!
I am new last year to chickens but have gone from 12 to 33. At first DH wanted to know: " so whats the strategy with the chickens?"
Strategy? Is he crazy. Who has strategy when you're chicken crazy. Then he said no more eggs as we had a terrible hatch and the kids were crying and my cat ate one of the babies ugh..... I just told him to except more eggs in the mail this week and he said " ok whatever". So looks like i have my chicken way!
Congratulations to the winners esp. Black goat!
