Got what I believe is a silver laced Wyandotte who’s about 6 weeks old! I think she’s a pullet but wanted to know what you all thought.

I don’t know if it matters, but she’s been eating a 20% chick grower feed since I brought her home (she was broody raised in my flock, so all the girls switched to grower). Not sure if that means she’s growing slower than if she was on starter.

Okay, we've got 3 votes for cockerel and 2 votes for pullet! :)

When would be a good time to post an update, when the answer may be more certain? 8 weeks old? 10 weeks old? 12 weeks old?

I *will* say that this photo was taken after 5-10 minutes of chasing her/him around in order to catch her, and the weather's been hot.

And re: the grower feed - yes, I know baby chicks are supposed to start on chick starter. ;-) But I'd read elsewhere that if you have a free-ranging flock of mixed ages, it's best to switch everyone to grower feed (laying hens still have access to oyster shell). The chicks free ranges and also get lots of meal worms and eggs.

How's about a repost of pix at 10 - 12wks, I'm thinking pullet but the red wattles are throwing me off. Everyone has different opinions & practices, I read about feeding Grower with Oyster Shells on the side. I too start my chicks off with Medicated Chick Starter (smallest bad I can get) for the first month or until I run out, then switch to Flock Raiser with Oyster Shells on the side when they start laying. I also ferment their feed to it stretches out.
