7 dead and need advice/ with pic

I am sorry about the loss of your little fuzzy butts - quite a bit of discussion about the arrival of chicks lately and the rate of loss. It is sad. I wish the best for your fuzzy ones!

I have chicks arriving from Ideal on the 27th - it will be 2 days for transit apparently. How long was it from TX to IL? Were they delayed?

whenev you are ordering chicks to be delivered when it is cold outside, you are going to get dead ones.. OK, for those of you who have had all yours arrive live, condratulations... I am not talking about the unusually lucky shipments here,

If I were a hatchery, I would not ship to cold areas until May..

face it, the USPO is not equipped to handle mail that has to be kept warm..

It boils down to this, every body is partly to blame for this. USPO, Hatchery, and people who order early..

When your chicks arrive they will need a warm (not hot) light to survive. CLEAN, FRESH water and some medicated chick starter (Purina brand works for me). crumble some boiled egg whites for treats and drop to them. You CANNOT allow them to walk around in pooh! It causes cocci and they will start dying. If you are serious about them getting a nealthy start, go to the feed store and get some powdered LS-50 medication. 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon of LS-50 in one gallon of FRESH water for the first week. Discontinue after the first week. The chicks will be cold and dehydrated when you first get them so dip each ones beak in fresh clean water and quickly set them under a heated light. If the chicks start piling on top of each other, they are COLD. If they are gasping for air or moving far away from the light, they are HOT. Adjust accordingly. HEAT is a major problem with new hatched chicks, Coccid is a big problem too. This post is NOT to bust anyones chops! Just trying to help in my own crude way.

My first shippment of birds came when it was colder outside and I have most definatly done everything right with the watering temperature etc I have compared the size of some of the birds and they appear a bit smaller. supply and demand

In the second pic...the black with the stripe on the back.....that is not an australorp. Did you order any Silver Laced Wyandottes? They have the stripes like that. The Aussies do not.

Good luck with the babies.

I just spoke with Ideal and they were very good with replacements we will see what happens I do think that it was the shipping being very rough on them not as much the chill but the handling. Baby chicks are baby chicks they need to be carefull you think it would brighten their day to have such a treasured package come their way and they could be gentle with it. I am praying for a safe journey this week!!!
