So chicks are now 7 weeks old. No more fluffy butts....instead a whole lotta chicken dander! Feathers and colorings are getting interesting. They seem to get a long well - we do not notice much in the way of problems or fighting at this point. We added another roost, and increased the dowel size to give them a more comfortable perch size. We did want at least 1 male, and the BJG and the dark brown Leghorns were straight run - it appears we have 3 males from these straight runs (2 Dark Brown Leghorn males and 1 BJG male). There is a question on the Barred Plymouth Rock - one is developing a redder comb, but not sure if it is normal variation within females or not. The Barred Plymouth Rocks were sold sexed and our receipt says pullets, so hoping that they both are sexed correctly.

Agree the barred rocks are pullets, and the EE does look like a cockerel. Tail feathers are starting to curl and the saddle feathers are slower to come in on the males, at least in my experience. I've had a few that were VERY hard to tell until they were older though, they seem to take a little longer to be sure sometimes. He's going to be pretty. I have a hen now that I thought was a cockerel at this age. Since they are 'mixed breeds' sometimes they don't follow the 'average'.

Easter egger looks like a cockerel to me. The tail is starting to curl on the end plus red comb.

I agree on the EE being cockerel. The tail really look male.

Wah!! Like everyone else that gets a male from sexed pullets, we are disappointed. But, he is a really beautiful bird- his feather coloration is very pretty! Now to work on re-homing plans.

yep he definitely is a looker.
good luck on rehoming.

Thanks. Looks like we have 5 boys in the batch of chicks. We can have roosters, but 5 is too many! I’m pretty sure I have a place for 1 (maybe 2) to go to. I’ll be asking to see if their offer still stands.
