7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

Good luck to everyone! Im out :( My duck pipped about 3:30 yesterday. My husband text me while I was a work so I didn't find out till later on in the evening. He said everything looked good humidity and temp wise. Said it was making noise! And then the chicken egg pipped wrong end about 5 he said. Said it was still peeping and working on the pip when he went to bed they were making noise. When I got home around midnight there wasn't any noise I figured they were resting. My husband got up at 6 for work still no noise I got up at 7 with the babies no noise. So my SIL came over about an hour ago. She's hatched dozens of hundreds and is what you would call a meddler I guess. I didn't want to open it but was worried. She took a look at the duck and he had pipped but died as the chicken had pipped wrong side and died without absorbing yolk. Duck didn't seem to have much if any yolk. Not sure what happened or why. My 8 year old is pretty upset and wants to try again but I think we will wait a little bit. Plus my chickens aren't laying at the moment anyways and don't want to have any shipped until we start getting better. Looking at a new bator in the coming up months so maybe things will go better next time! Thanks for everyone's help! Hope everyone has great luck!

Edited to add pic.

All 10 duck eggs went into lock down yesterday at noon. I candled right before and had several internal pips. Shortly after that, had two eggs with dimples (where they are trying to pip, but haven't busted through yet. Not sure what that's called.) This morning, those two have fully pipped (one is starting the zip), plus another one has fully pipped and two others are trying to pip.

They are peeping a lot too.

All in all, looks to be going good.
You are on the way!

My incubator is peeping, no pips yet that I can see

HURRY UP CHICKIES!!!
Go Chickies!

My hatcher got up to 102 last night. I'm hoping that it didn't affect anyone in there. I did candle a couple eggs and still saw movement. No pips or peeps here that I can see. My air cells really seem small this time around. I don't usually track them but I've never had an issue. We'll see how this works out

my humidity is only around 50 right now. I think I'll wait to up it more.
They will be fine if the are moving.

No kidding!!!!
locked down last evening, then woke to find temp in bator has jumped to 103 this morning?
WTH?
after all the clears I had, and the few quitters, I only have six hopefuls left!
didn't have time to candle this morning after noting the temp spike, hope they are still ok.
They will likely be fine. 103 is not too bad--104 or so for too long will kill them.

Shoot for 99 or even 98 - 97.

Little sucker got in a hurry :D

1 down, hopefully 9 to go.

I have two little quail!!!

No signs of anything on my eggs, so far. I moved them to a "hatcher" incubator yesterday morning, which is now struggling to maintain full temps. It dropped almost a full degree last night! We had a cool night here in Phoenix and it was near freezing, so our house got a little chilly.

(The other 'bator I have is the HOVABATOR GENESIS - which I highly recommend! It self-adjusts the temp so even if the room the eggs are in gets cool or heats up, the incubator automatically keeps the temp on target. LOVE that incubator!)

I'm sure the eggies are fine, but the move may have slowed the hatch a little.

I took new photos of my older babies - some of the siblings of these eggies! I can't wait to hatch more from this breeder pen. The goal of this breeding project was to pull spotted (Mottled) color from the moms, out of the mostly-white Dad, who had great body type but totally wrong color. I got about four teenagers now who are the right color and should show terrific body type, thanks to their handsome Daddy!

Here's the breeder pen, showing Dad and Moms. Moms are "right" color, (spotted) and Dad is beautiful but "wrong" color (white)

Here are the babies at six weeks old!

Chickie on the far left - beautiful spotty baby!!! Most are white with some black marks (Colombian coloration) or Buff Colombian, but that one got COLOR. That baby is PERFECT! Just what I've been trying for.

Some spotty color is going on with these two as well. I can't wait to see how they turn out!

And everyone wants hens - but I hope these spotty babies are BOYS!

Looking for new Daddies to put over my little Aloha hens late this Spring.

Babies are nice and plump. Dad is from Light Sussex bloodlines, which are huge meaty chickens. Hens were some of my biggest spotty gals. Looking to increase size and heft on my spotty little Alohas! Was breeding in hopes of getting some really nice roosters.

I'm so excited to see what the New Year's batch has in store! Will I get more like these?!??

27 eggs (out of 42) made it to lockdown. I'll be thrilled if I get 20 to hatch.
You have a nice flock for sure!

I can't believe everyone is already having pips and zips and chicks!! Very, very exciting!! I'm sorry I have not been on much. I didn't realize how hard it would be to do a hatch along this time of year. With kids home, holidays, family visiting. It's been nuts! But things are slowing down, just in time for hatch!! My eggs have drawn down, I might get an internal pip tonight or even an external one. Should definitely have pips by morning! I locked down 8 out of 13 eggs! Some are pullet eggs, so

. These are my first eggs from my backyard that I'm hatching myself!

This is true! We will have a house full by tomorrow. Things are slow today so I'm hoping things start to pick up in the bator while I have some free time. Good luck with your very own flock!

I had to go to Spokane for a couple days emergency, and I thought I lost all my eggs, because my house got cold, but I hatched one. the eggs due later next month are still going strong.
I love stories like this!
