7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

Bummer!  I'm trying out a first-time broody myself.  So far she's sticking to it...even let me know when I got too close (ouch! my poor finger!)

Been there done that too..that's actually how I got started incubating. Someone had said, best have a back up incubator, they don't always stick to it.  Well this little stinker did all the way, until they pipped.  Guess that freaked her out.   She flew the coop!  I had to take pipped eggs in and hurry and get that incubator warmed up.  Got three babies out of the 5.   I was hooked!

I give up trying to figure out what she's thinking. I went out to gather her eggs and put them in the bator and she's back on them, flat as a pancake, growling at me lol. Last night, she went up to the roost and I had to put her back on her nest. Not sure what she's doing but maybe I just happened to see her every time she was off the nest today. Oh well. If she fails but still wants babies, I'll give her a couple when the ones in the bator hatch.

Does anyone happen to know how soon after mating begins that turkey hens will come into lay? There's been a lot of mating going on in my turkey pen lately and my hens are squatting like crazy. Also, why are the girls strutting after being mated? Just curious.I'm a first time turkey mom. They are all, anywhere from 6-8 months old.

Yes and they came this morning

Finally!! Despite the delay and not being marked as eggs or fragile

none were broken. Whew! No rolling air cells, just some saddles.

This group of 11 are blue/black/splash copper Marans, blue/black/splash Cochins (standards), and Mille Bantam Cochins.

They will go in the bator today to join the others!
Oh good! Still haven't gotten my other package. Hoping it comes by afternoon, the other one was delivered by UPS..so, could be around 5:00 like the other one.
