7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

Ok, I'm kind of a leave things alone, and if they are supposed to happen, they will happen type person. Again, this is my first attempt!  I was trying a dry hatch, My humidity thin/temperature thing said I was at 34 - 36% humidity, temp at 99.5 - 100.  I heard all the horror stories of bad readings, so I bought a second one - digital.  It's been in for 2 days, and the temp says 99.5  to 100.  But the humidity says it was 16.  Original one still says temp 100, humidity 32.  So I candled my 11 day olds.  There are 30 plus eggs in there.  I candled about 18.  The air cell looks a LITTLE big on most, REALLY big on 2.  There was movement in all but 1.  Tomorrow, I will go get a 3rd and hope it matches one of the two.  Is it better to error on the humid side, or the dry side at this point?  The HAL eggs all have the right size air cell.

Thanks!!

Try calibrating your hygrometer... fill a shot glass with non-Iodized salt, add water til it stays wet but not above the salt and place it and the hygrometer in a ziploc bag and leave it for 12 hrs... it should say 75% humidity if it's correct, otherwise add or subtract to get 75% and that will tell you how off it is...

Thank you for the quick response!! We are non drinkers, so no shot glass, how about a small ramiken? Also, I can't find our plain salt, how about sea salt? Does it matter how big the zip lock is?

Thanks!!!

Anything small will work, shot glass is just an easy size to compare... a 1/4c measure would work too... I dunno if sea salt works the same, should ask Ron or Sally about that... was always told to use non-Iodized salt so that's all I've used... ziploc just needs to be big enough to set the container of salt and hygrometer in side by side and sealed...

Thank you!! We clean our fish tanks with the plain (non Iodized) salt....I'm just not sure where it went. I'll just buy more - it would be good to have on hand. Maybe I'll get a shot glass while I'm there...lol.

Have a great night!!

Thanks again!

Candled my Call eggs and pulled about a dozen clears... I pushed the viability window quite a bit, so expected that... and down to 4 shipped Call eggs but lucky to have those, lol... box disappeared in the mail and showed up late with awful air cell damage...

Still have many eggs going strong and will candle my Ohiki eggs this weekend... :)

Sorry for the Call eggs. Good luck with the Ohikis!!

Thanks, it's ok... knew it was gonna happen, but didn't want another staggered hatch... we have these so far and more due Fri then the NY hatch, lol...

:love
My air cells are a bit larger than I want at this stage, 6 days old..so I upped the humidity a bit. They are happy and swimming around..those little black dots. Like Shahtar's!
Great pics! That's with your home made candler, right?
