7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

It's a Styrofoam hova bator forced air with electronic thermostat (I forget model number lol). It's usually good on its own but I tend to run it a bit warm already. The temp in the room has gotten a bit chilly so I think it may have over compensated a tad with warming back up...maybe? Sounds good anyway lol. Temps are under control though and since it's officially day 7, I'm candling later

That is a real possibility--the temperature of the room plays a big part in the ability of the incubator to keep a constant temperature.

Brinsea sent me an email add today for their cabinet incubators. The new ones have a sensor for the temperature of the room and if it gets too hot or cold in the room, an alarm will go off.

If you can't calibrate it, you can just add 20... I put a sticker on mine, plus 20, so I remember.

Thanks!!! But, would it always be 20 percent off? Or, can the ratio change?

For example, I have a truck with a bad speedometer. When it says I'm doing 38, I've determined I"m actually doing 45. But, when it says 50, I'm actually doing 65. So, the faster I go, the bigger the variance.

Humidity is not as important as temperature--It does not need to be as tightly controlled so if is not super accurate it will be fine. adding 20% will work for incubation.

I candled this morning and removed 5 eggs. Three were clears and two were blood rings.

I have 39 developing out of 45!

Great for store eggs.

Was there any doubt yours would do well? :D ;)

Ok, I tried this test.  At the 12 hour mark, the Hydrometer showed 55%, not 75%.  So, I know the new digital one is wrong.  Is there a way to re-calibrate it?  Or, do I return it and get another?

Thanks!!

If it makes you feel better, return it, but I'd just mark it as 20% low...

X2

And you can always recheck it between hatches...

Setting hens brood eggs regardless of temperature and humidity.
She can't control either ambient quality.
She can only control what's under her so humidity should be less important.

I'm totally out. I candled, day 11, and all I got was glowing eggs and in the lighter shelled ones all I could see was yellow yolk swishing around in there. I took a leap and cracked open two, and nope nothing. I cracked open all 24 and NO development in ANY of them. My guess is that either my new incubator spiked and killed day 1 or 2. OR my Roo, while a great dancer and chicken stomped, is too young, 9 months old. I have seen bullseyes when using eggs for cooking... so who knows.

Bummed, but may set more. Waiting to see if the lady I was setting for wants them 10 days late or just wants to wait until later in the spring.

REally bummed.

Hopefully he will get his act together.

light can be a factor for rooster fertility.

Sorry to hear about the clears!

Im sorry. :( that is a crappy thing.

I had 8 out of 12 shipped faverolle eggs turn out as clears, 1 early quitter, and 3 left with life but sketchy air cells. As an aside question: Does anyone have any advice for growing embryos with detached air cells?? My duck eggs are semi propped in ball canning rings so that the large ends are slightly elevated to keep the aircell at the right part of the egg. They are only day 4 but i see definate growth (ive been candling them every day as i wasnt sure theyd grow due to the awful state of their air cells), with either rolling air cells or saddle shaped cells (no normal ones).
