7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

awe thats too bad... I always keep clears in until day 14... unless they give me trouble. then they are toast

Some of them look like they want to do something....by that settled pink look...You know what I mean... Just no good spiders like my eggs have. I'll give them a chance. They can take as long as they want. I'm jumping the gun by looking so early. I'm not picking them up either, still keeping them perfectly upright and not moving.

Good to know. I was looking at Zebus, but if that's the case, nevermind them... I guess i'll look for another miniature.

They are really cool with super personalities, but at this point, they are weed eaters here. I would love a smaller Jersey or even a mini Hereford to milk. My family used to raise Herefords here and I have a soft spot for them.
There is a group of monks who use Zebu for milk and I contacted them. They said the same thing about their cows needing the calf to let down the milk. Zebu milk has different properties than our domestic cows. I'd have to look it up again to remember but it's supposed to be much better for you....

I'm new to all these breeds but I find the Silkies do REALLY well with our larger breeds, and I'm still really shocked at how well everyone gets along. I have an abundance of roosters and they tend to keep things stirred up a bit. But the Silkies hold their own really well and they're a hardy bunch. I'd say that the Silkie roosters are probably more aggressive than the Easter Egger roosters in the flock. The Easter eggers would be more likely to step on another chicken by accident because they're such big goofs. But everyone is really sweet and I spend more time being careful not to step on anyone because every breed is under foot. The Old English game birds are the only ones that show any aggression. If I had another coop the OEGBs would be separate. All the pullets/hens get along famously. The OEGB pullets throw their weight around only if someone comes into "their" area. My original pair of OEGB will seek out trouble.

If it was a beach scene: the Silkies would be the people sun tanning on their towels, the Easter Eggers would be out catching the waves surfing...and the Old English Game Birds would the beach volley ball jocks looking to intimidate someone, my barred Rock x rooster would be security and the Guinea's would be the trouble making teenagers...

I still love my OEGBs though.

Cute photo.  :)   I've had mostly bearded silkies.  I now have a non muffed silkie.  I am loving her.  I think it's a her at this point.  Not sure it would really make a difference in whether or not they go broody more.   I am pretty sure, that most type of bantam will go broody more often than a LF.  :)

I agree with that. I have a tiny little OEGB hen who is ALWAYS trying to go broody. She wouldn't be broken this fall so I gave in and let her raise 2 babies. All my other birds are LF and she could barely keep them under her after a couple weeks. It actualy got to the point that she would almost disappear between her two babies when they were all on the roost at night before she cut them off lol (they were silver penciled rocks)

My little OEGB is my only bantam right now and she lives quite happily with the rest of the flock who EASILY are 10 times bigger than her lol. And she's NOWHERE near the bottom of the pecking order either. I love your beach scenario. Making me really want to go!

Crazy day: went to visit famiy a couple days earlier than I had planned (i am a genius and sliced my leg with a saw and ended up with 8 stitches)so had to bring the incubator with me. Lots of fun hobbling across walmart on crutches to buy an inverter so the bator didn't get too cold. Everything is on lockdown now that I am at my sister's place. Lost 1 egg on the trip, but it was a green egg that never started developing that I couldn't see into. Luckily it didn't explode-just cracked. Ah the adventures of hatching (by the way saw horses were invented for a reason, guess I figured out what that was...)

Oh dang! Sorry about your leg!!!! Hope it heals quickly!

Candled, again. 5 of the 18 shipped eggs have stopped. The only eggs that I set from mine that is growing is from the Marans I only set it because it was the last they laid for season and it was refrigerated before starting.

Yikes! I lost one egg but the rest are still growing great so far. I had 6 shipped eggs.
