7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

Just peeping in to announce that we are proud parents of two baby chicks so far. The first one hatched around I want to say 9 am and the second one by around 12 or 1. So far no other pipping but I have high hopes being that these are just backyard who knows hatching eggs, but after candling them in the duration, they all but one so far, look to be good to go. I guess time will tell, but for now, I am like eeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkkk!!!! Such a proud mama!! Yes, it made a heck of a mess and seemed to be a rush to get out once it heard the first one peeping. Can you imagine how I felt when I heard what I thought is peeping, was listening, laid my head back down and then my hubby said there is a chick in there lol! I hopped up so fast, only to see a little hole being pecked through rofl!! Sorry about any glare, the small glass window on the top of my incubator, is only so big, so had a hard time getting a decent pic lol! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!!!!! :celebrate
Yay!!!!!! :yiipchick
New SFH baby an entire day early! I've got more SFH's, marans and Isabelle Leghorns pipping!!! It's amazing how having the bator calibrated and at the right temperature changes things...duh!
Double :yiipchick

Tornadoes and rain. I have a pen pal buddy in Von Ormy he is 92 I haven't heard from him in 3 weeks. Last letter he said he had fallen several times getting feed to his chickens. Yep still has his chickens. Started when he was very young. If I'm not mistaken he was around 10. Gosh does he have the stories. We met through a chicken magazine and he wanted letters only. No other contact. Anyways I'm getting a little concerned. I do know when holidays hit the family comes over and stays with him trying to get some of the chores done that he can't do anymore. At such time he does not write. Hope that's all it is..
That is so neat. This old fellow wants to write, no computer I'll bet. Writing really is a more personal touch to it. People tend to write more meaningful and thoughtful things when writing on paper. I hope you hear from him soon. 92 is getting up there! You could keep writing, and if anything has happened, then family may write you back and let you know. Let's just hope you get a letter from him soon though. :)

LOL I used to let them free fly... my dad said I had to stop cause they were pooping on the roof. Now they just stay in their pen and everyone is happy (even them, they are scared of coming out of their pen cause a hawk has been hanging around).

This is the female who is sitting on the egg, her mate is in the background standing on their nest spot. I'll tell them you are cheering them on.

Tell them I am cheering them on too!

If lockdown is tomorrow do I stop turning them at noon? Or does it even matter
Not sure this has been answered, catching up. I personally don't worry about what time they went in, or what time I lock down, I just set them, then count the days from there .. day after being the first day. I marked my eggs last night, and set them on the liner..always do this the night before lock down day. Put some more water in there, and then today, being lock down day, work on getting the humidity up. I will have it up to 60% for these eggs by later this evening.

My eggs in lock down. Funny, I used orange liner, then just grabbed a sponge, and it was green. Looks kind of cool together.

Sorry but it got too daunting to keep up with all the reading so I dropped out. I was one of the earlier setters. This was my first time hatching. I ordered 6 Heritage RIR and they sent 9. I put 12 of my own eggs in the bator along with those 9 making for a total of 21 eggs. After week two I discarded a yoker (one of my own) and one of the RIR had a blood ring so that bid didn't make it leaving 19. I couldn't see much development in most of these eggs because of how dark so I was going off the air sac. I set them on 12/5 at 6PM making 12/26 at 6PM day 21. The remaining 11 that I contributed all hatched early on 12/25. I saw one pip the morning of 12/26 of a RIR shell. The RIR took so much longer to hatch. I thought I was only getting 3 and they just kept pipping. I pulled two of the RIR out yesterday and put in the brooder and this morning I pulled 3 more out to put in the brooder. I discarded one eggs last night because I am pretty sure he didn't make it and left two eggs in the bator. Last night I noticed another had pipped at the end of day 22 (lol). He hasn't made much progress but I am sure he is working diligently to get out of that shell. I just thought the timing of hatching fresh local eggs versus shipped eggs is very interesting. I suspect it will take him the duration of the day to hatch probably pushing him into 24 days in the incubator. Out of 21 eggs, 17 hatched. Not bad for a newbie. The Dark Cornish/White Rock Crosses are the cutest. There are 6 of those. 5 Red Ranger/White Rock Crosses and 6 RIR. Well, one of the RIR hasn't finished hatching yet but I have faith he will make it. The little beak is sticking out of the hole he pipped and he is clearly working on getting out.
Wow, not bad at all..let us know now that you told us that you have one more that it hatching! On almost day 24 at that! Photos too..we need chickie photos right now!

This is what I thought I'd do. He did say the fall hurt his shoulder so that he was having a hard time writing. He used to write for a chicken magazine and was offering to answer any questions people might have about his breeding experience. Well he raised game birds which I was not interested in but the cross over was fun to ask questions any ways. Then we got into other subjects of his upbringing which was cool in itself. He always said he liked getting my mail as others were only interested in talking game chickens. Gosh I hope he's ok.
