7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

Just an update. Candled this morning. One quitter, two maybes, but gonna leave them for the duration if they don't smell or ooze, and four remaining viable. Pretty miserable about the whole thing right now.

We're gonna get there. We're learning in the meantime.

What do you all DO with all these chicks? I hatch for new coop owners and city coops that cannot have roosters and who don't want farm store chick days breeds or can't find room for those giant minimum orders companies require.

I hope to expand, to cross and improve and sell some chicks along the way I guess...lol.
(Or at least my husband hopes I sell some along the way)

Wow congrats to everyone with pips and new chicks and ducklings!! :clap
I'm still waiting impatiently for the first group to pip. I set these on the 11th around noon eastern time. I had 3/6 fertile, one early quitter so 2 EE mixes remain.

The brown layer shipped eggs set the same day were all duds. All 15 were clears. No development :-( The breeder offered to send me another shipment in the spring which is nice.

Group 2 locks down Friday (these were my shipped eggs that got stuck at a mail sorting facility over a weekend) I have 5/12 that are viable after a rough and delayed trip. Those were allowed in the HAL (thanks, Ron!) but won't hatch until the 3rd.

Then I had 2 others that somehow were slipped into the bator lol. Those are test eggs from the 5 month old splash copper Marans in my avatar and a black sex link hen. They are looking great on day 12

I would love to build a pond - stock it with fish, build a walking path around the pond... if I built a pond, then I would hatch some ducks... maybe get a couple swans too!

As much as I want to build one - it seems like too much trouble right now (would have to clear some woods) -- but the neighbors across the street currently have and are using an excavator... maybe they won't mind if I borrow it?

I rebuilt existing one and build a walking path and stocked with fish from my friends pond. Everything was going great. Then some river otters came in and the fish. Weeds took over. Maybe ducks would have helped. The woods has pretty much taking it back. Man it doesn't take long for that stuff to grow back.
