7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

Oh no, we just went through this. Single digits for nights in a row. We were only in the teens through the day. Now today...it was 39 degrees! And, tonight will only go down into the 20's. What a relief. I have some frost bitten combs out there. :/ I didn't put any Vaseline on them.

Me too. Found that 2 of my roos with fairly sizeable combs got some frost bite over the weekend when I wasn't home much. Starting to be really black and crusty. Happened with their daddy and grand daddy, so I wasn't really surprised, but I should have thought to put bag balm on them due to the high moisture this winter (being hot and then cold and hot and then cold). Oh well. Never seems to bother them much.

It's gonna be 2 degrees here tonight

I hope the pigeons keep their baby warm enough!

Me too! Somehow I trust animals more than man-made stuff! We lost power briefly today! Thankfully it was AFTER the hatch!

Thanks-

I appreciate your confidence! They are protected from drafts. We do have it set to turn off heat lamps if the temperature gets too high, but I'm not worried about that! I'll have more piece of mind when I see them awake in the morning! I miss having chicks in the house, but I DO NOT miss the mess!

I miss them in the house too, but I hear ya on the mess. It was horrible to clean up last year, I had chicks in the office room from Jan 1 - end of May, Oh and the smell. Changed the bedding all the time and still, ick. Hubby put his foot down. Said, no more chicks in the house. If I wanted to hatch them, they live out in the shed. Though I convinced him to let me incubate and hatch inside since I was sure the 'bators couldn't maintain a decent temp out there.

jb..you are right..they don't seem to like it..but it ruins their beautiful red combs. I have a RIR rooster right now. I didn't notice that he also had it.. besides my leghorn..no surprise..but it made me sad to see it.

You can see it on the right tip.
I have to show off his beautiful mane. I love his color, a nice deep maroon.

He's still a baby, only 7 months old. But, he's being a man! I am getting fertile eggs and
setting them.

Does anyone else still have chicks/ducks, anything..still hatching?

Well- since I LOVE chicks so much, I've decided to hatch some more for Valentines Day! I have a long weekend for President's Day, so its ideal for a sleepless night! Hopefully by fixing a few mistakes I can get a much better hatch rate (well, pending eggs...)

Brr, it's been pretty warm here this winter, this is the first really cold night. I probably should have put something on my roosters comb, but I forgot and there is no way I'm going outside again tonight, it's 10 degrees right now.

Yeah luckily mom and dad pigeon are my most reliable pair with raising babies.

That's good you lost power AFTER the hatch!

It will freeze here for the next three nights. Then these crazy chicks are going outside with the brooder plate.
