8 eggs in the incubator

I got my guinea eggs today so I will be setting them in the morning anywhere from 10-noon. So happy that they all arrived in tact, I just hope the USPS didn't scramble them as they were in transit for 5 days. EEK I hope I get some to hatch.

So you're setting tomorrow? I think I will join you my friend during that same time on tomorrow. I have been gathering my guinea eggs for the last 3 days, turning them daily and keeping them in a cool place. This will be another practice for me. Only my 3 try at hatching.

I'll be setting a batch with you guys too, it'll probably be more like early evening when I finally get mine cookin' tho, lol. I'm going to try to set a large batch (1 auto turner tray full and then I'll fill any other empty slots I have in the other 2 incubators.. so maybe around 50 eggs). This may be my last batch, cuz I'm burning out... lol. I just need to confirm the fertility rates on my other 2 flocks, so I can start selling hatching eggs, and this last batch should do the trick.

Great it's a date!

This is my second try at hatching so you've got one up on me. I have one bator almost full of chicken eggs, and the other with duck and guinea eggs in the morning. My duck eggs will have almost 24 hours on the guineas though. I should have the chicken bator available for a hatcher though as the time is a week apart. I'm not an expert on candeling and don't know how great the air sacks are on these eggs. I did see one air sack rolling around the top part of the egg on one when I candled a few minutes ago. I am going to set all of them anyway and throw out the ones that aren't fertile next week.

I hope you get really good fertility rates. I don't have an auto turner in the bator I'm using for the guineas. I am planning on hand turning three times a day. Should I get a turner? I really can't spare the funds for it right now but if it is really needed I will get another turner.

OH I almost forgot, the girl who sold me the eggs on ebay offered me a dozen eggs from her mixed flock for the price of shipping. I thought that was very nice of her, not to mention really good business. I'll be looking to buy from her again.

I'm setting my 20 shipped guinea eggs tonight, under 2 broodys

. I couldn't really see much when I candled them last night, air cells are small, didn't see anything to indicate they were moving around. Wish I could say that about the box of chicken eggs I got yesterday. They were crunched and air cells rolling everywhere. PO's fault not shippers.

My fertile eggs are always clear before they are set... there's only minimal cell development (more like cell division) on the yolk (blastoderm), because it's actually dormant, so I doubt you could see any thing when candling dormant eggs, at least I never have out of the thousands of eggs I have candled. The air cells are always visible tho, and you can see if they are intact at the top of the egg (which is a good sign), or floating around or in the wrong spot (which are both bad signs).

But cool, that means 4 of us have set or will be setting eggs very close to each other! This should be fun

Ok, the incubator is ready, the eggs are and I think I'm ready.

I took a pic of the guinea eggs that I will incubate. I weighed them. The weights were 44g - 4 g. I'm not a guinea expert, so I don't know if that's good or bad. Peeps, you are the guinea expert, so please tell me what is a good start off weight for a guine egg?

Great! I couldn't see much when I candled my eggs either, but I could see the air sacks that were rolling around all over the eggs. I got duck eggs that were crunched. I wish usps would get it together. No wonder they are closing down facilities, you can't trust them to "handle with care".

I set my eggs this morning too. I have them with the ducks and have hand turned once already. I will turn again before I go to bed.

Kuntrygirl, I weighed all my eggs too and yours are much bigger. I think the biggest egg I got was 37. I am beginning to seriously question these "extremely rare" eggs. I think I'll try to get a photo posted later tomorrow or Monday.

r4eboxer... hand turning is a pain, but Guinea eggs do fine with it, a turner's not crucial. I'll be hand turning 5 extra eggs I have in one of the 'bators for a while. Last season I was running 2 1588's (with turners), both with a double layer on top of an extra 30 eggs, and then usually an additional 23 extras along the sides of the turner that I had to hand turn (95 eggs each 'bator)... and also 2 more 'bators (different brands that I don't trust as much... an LG with a fan and a Fall Harvest product with a fan, both with turners) each with 41 eggs in the turners, 29 on top and only 6 more extras on one side (so 76 eggs in each of those)

(The previous season I had 1 1588 and 1 LG with turners double layered most of the season too). I tried to turn the eggs on top and sides 5 times a day, sometimes it was only 3 tho. (I don't recommend doing that on a regular basis tho... the extra weight can burn out the turner motors, and it definitely voids your warranty! lol). This season I've been avoiding double layers if at all possible (I'm completely SICK of hand turning, lol)... and have been eating and selling more eggs this time, instead of setting so many, lol.

Yep it's been a pain and I've only done it twice so far. I LOVE my turner in my hovabator and I'm thinking about ordering a turner for the little giant. I'm going to look on ebay to see what kind of deal I can find. Southern states want 49.99 for the turner so I know I can find it cheaper online. I did hand turn my goose eggs, they were too heavy for the turner and they are huge and I only had 4. It was not big deal, but I can see with these little eggs it's going to get old really fast. I bumped the bator right after I had turned all the eggs and they rolled...SO I had to turn them all back to the right place.

I will say you are a hatchaholic but I'd say you've learned a lot along the way too.
