8 week old chicks at risk of drowning?

I have a three gallon water bowl with rocks in it currently but was wondering when would be a safe time to remove them. I included a picture of one of them in the bowl for reference.

They're fine as long as they can't get submerged and waterlogged, which it looks like they can't.

They would have to lay down with their head in the water. I think it’s ok too but just a little nervous.

They'll be fine; they won't drown at this point. They're old enough to know how to drink properly and not fall asleep face-first in their water.

They're plenty big enough to handle the pan you have pictured. In fact, the youngster in question looks particularly irritated that you haven't filled "the pool,} yet! Ya better go find that hose before you have a mutiny on your hands!

One word of caution, though; I stopped using those low plastic carry pans of the type used by busboys in restaurants because I found them upside down with a chicken trapped underneath. Chickens love to perch on stuff and they'd hop up onto the rim. When there wasn't much water, the chicken's weight would flip the tray over onto them.
