Purchased both as sexed pullets from the feed store (along with a golden comet and a black sex link, but I’m not wondering about those gals for obvious reasons). I’ve been looking to adopt a rooster around the same age or a little older for them, but I want to make sure neither of these two are males. I know the safest thing to do would be to wait to acquire a rooster until they start laying, which I will probably do, but thought I’d check in here just for fun.

The barred rock is my favorite (outgoing, curious, social) and I know that can often be indicative of being a roo, but maybe she’s just a brave, smart girl? Honestly though, I would love if she was my rooster. She squares up with the others all the time, and tends to have a very upright posture, but she could just be near/at the top of the pecking order. Nothing about her barring/comb/feathers says “roo” to me.

The blue laced red wyandotte I am less sure about. She was definitely my slowest to feather out, and still hasn’t finished exactly 100%. Her tail is still coming in, very slowly, but then again the Wyandottes I’ve seen all seem to have short tails. This one is definitely my most shy/anxious personality-wise, she’s always the first to call out potential dangers, but she is the largest weight-wise. I definitely noticed her legs seemed bigger than the others while they were in the brooder, but seems to have leveled out with the others in the last couple of weeks. Behavior doesn’t scream “roo,” but that could just be an individual difference.

What do you guys think?
