So as stated I have 5 8 week old peachicks. Well 9 now. They've been hanging in the brooder with similar aged chicks and guinea Keets. Tonight they went to roost in the rafters. Not sure if they've done this before. They stay in the brooder so I'm not really worried. I shouldn't be right? How long until they're wandering hearts take over?

I turned mine loose the day they turned 4 months old, it took them weeks to leave the area they were brooded in, however my second batch took off with the older peas and left the satey of the pen area way sooner.

I use dogs to watch out for my birds so i don't worry about critters getting them, plus they are pretty savey birds after 1 and 2 years on the loose.

Do you have any potos to share?

Hi, I have just joined this site. I have just got a gorgeous 3 year old peahen and 6, 8 week old chicks. When will I know what sex they are ??

The younger they are the longer they will stay in the covered protected area. Sooner or later one will venture outside and call the rest to the greens and the sun. They will be more inclined to come back at night while they are young but eventually will roost outdoors. I had two 8 week old spalding chicks escape last year while we were moving birds. I decided to just leave them outside since we had so many. They went right into an open barn and stayed in that barn until they were probably 4 months old before they ventured back out. They are a year old now and still go back into the barn to roost and don't venture more than 50-60 feet from the barn. They are both males so I expect they will begin traveling next spring. I will probably throw a spalding hen from this year in the barn with them to see if that will keep them from wandering to far.
