80 Year Old Woman Crimninal Charges for Feeding Ducks

Here is the thing though. When you let people get away with breaking little laws, yes even this one, they start to be broken more and more. At that point how do you justify actually enforcing the law? How do you choose which laws to enforce? With the economy the way it is as you said, what laws are ok to ignore?

Way too many little laws without enough resources to properly manage enforcing the big ones. Way too much government trying to micromanage the people. Like not having room to keep drunk drivers in jail but yet going after jaywalkers.

I am not saying completely ignore it. What I am saying is it seems to me there are so many other more important things to concern ourselves with. Whether or not an old lady is feeding ducks is not one of them in my book. It just seems to me that these people should have a bit more discernment on what they enforce this heavily. I agree she is breaking the law, she should face the punishment, but COME ON!!!! CRIMINAL CHARGES

!!!!!! Seems just a bit too far if you ask me. We let murderers run free while we prosecute an elderly lady for feeding ducks. ( I'm going to type that one more time in cap lock for emphasis) FOR FEEDING DUCKS. Really

??!!!

P.S. if it seems I'm lashing out at you, I am sorry I didn't mean for it to sound that way. This article just ( for the sake of a bit of chickens/duck humor) ruffled my feathers. There I said it.....IIIIIII said it.

Prosecutors upped the pressure, because they say that despite multiple unpaid fines, a no trespass order, nearly a dozen citations, and threats of a 30-day jail sentence, Butcher refuses to obey park rules

It looks like they already tried everything they could. More serious criminal charges is all they have left. I think she is too old for a spanking.

I am not saying I agree with the law. I'm just saying that she is not going about changing it the right way.

I do wonder WHY , they don't want them fed.

1. So they starve

2. if anything like around ,,,,,,most of these ducks coundn't fly away.

3. if they are fed yep they are going to poop.

4. this town needs to put their big pants on....removed the ducks or have somebody clean -up after them.

5 yes she is wrong breaking the law....LOCK HER UP. JK but they are looking at this all wrong ,she is not the reason the ducks are their...its the water ,and in the case here people drop them off there

just local goverment not knowing how to solve a problem........hell sell them ....guess what no duck no poop.

We have the same problem in our city and at many places, absolutely no one takes care of the domestic birds, which makes me a bit upset.

They kicked a friend of mine out of one park because when he fed the birds, they all gathered in the parking lot and some had actually gotten run over in the past and they blocked people from parking there. Plus, I guess they were getting in the way of boat launching and fishing. I asked my friend why he didn't just go feed in another spot where they weren't hanging out in the parking lot and the short answer is that he just didn't want to. He's not a whole lot younger than this lady and there were other areas where he could park and not have to walk far.

It sounds like they did everything they could to get this lady to stop that it's no longer a feeding the birds issue, it's a failure to follow a lawful order issue.

Idk, I'm against feeding park ducks and geese for the most part. Who knows what they get, and it probably isn't nutritionally sound for them. But as for the poop, it doesn't matter if the ducks are half starved, they will deficate multiple times in a day. I heard every 15-20 minutes. There just isn't anything you can do to stop an animal's bowels from moving. The thought is quite amusing though, to think that an old lady can cause THAT MANY ducks to poop that much seems absurd to me. I doubt she is your issue. I don't think she should be facing criminal charges, but I do think she should get herself a dog, or ducks of her own if she's so intent on feeding them. No excuse to breaking the law XD

Ruffled your feathers...LOL Thanks for the chuckle on an otherwise serious subject!~

Civil disobedience is an honored part of our culture. If she wanted to break the law to make a point, more power to her.

However, civil disobedience comes with consequences. You don't get to escape the consequences just because you were attempting to make a point. So it looks like she is going to get to be a conscientious objector while sitting in jail. That was her choice, because she had plenty of warning about it. She knew what she was doing was against the law and she knew what the consequences were. Her right to choose the route she chose. Her right to look at the consequences and do it anyway.

Feeding the birds in the park is not a small issue. My city spends tens of thousands of dollars every year cleaning up after the geese and people can't use the park because of the goose poop. Feeding the birds brings in more birds and causes them to stay because there is easy food. They don't have to migrate or go check other areas, looking for food.

Perhaps this criminal bird feeder is in an area where the geese are a real issue. Any of you who live where there are 3 domestic ducks in the local park have no idea how bad it can get if hundreds of Canadas move in because the food is free.

I feel bad for the woman but the law is the law. It's there for a reason. She was given MANY warnings and is the type who doesn't like to listen to what she's told. I would hate to see her go to jail but it's looks like that's exactly where she's headed.

This made the news all the way out in Seattle, evidently she wasn't just feeding a little bit, she was bringing a shopping cart of food, so much so that the rat population has exploded, if it was just a small back of food I would have said they should back off a bit, but a shopping cart? that is a bit much.
