Last year we raised 18 little chicks to adult hens that ended up laying 17 eggs a day most days. We couldn't stay in Wisconsin for the icy winter so gave our girls to two families. Now that we are back home we have 10 baby chicks (3 days old) that we hope to raise to be as good as last years. They are all "brown hens" and are doing fine, eating and drinking like little pros. They will stay in a big box in our kitchen until the snow melts and it warms up a little, then out to the coop we prepared for the last batch. There are 2 10 ft. 2x4's for roosting and 6 nesting boxes for egg laying. That worked out fine for 18 so 10 should do fine. The outside run has one side of fence that guards the nice garden which is fenced so the local deer stay out. After harvest last year the flock cleared all the green remains very nicely so it could be tilled. Wife and I are looking forward to this spring and summer + fall.
