What do you all use to mark your eggs? I've been using a soft leaded pencil, but it smears when I candle. Not that I'm entering any of my eggs in a fashion show, I just noticed (again) that it looks like I'm incubating dirty eggs!
A sharpie--I do not mark air cells but have identified eggs by date and breed

i also use a sharpie to mark my eggs but typically, the most I write on them is 1, 2, 3, or 4 to keep track of the staggered hatches. Occasionally, I'll also write the breed on the egg if they will be hard to tell apart from the others at hatch so I can separate them into hatching baskets.

I used a sharpie pen. I just numbered them so I knew when they were laid. Since she just recently started laying I wanted to be able to see if her later eggs did better than the others. I can't wait to candle tomorrow! I hope I see some action goin on in there!!!

I candled. What a neat thing to see! Husband was even around to see one's heartbeat :) So far it looks like I have at least one quitter and two not fertilized. I'm leaving them in for now since I want to be SURE there's no development. I'm REALLY skeptical on the Marans eggs, but it may just be early for them as well. My NN mixes and Ameracaunas seem to be doing GREAT. My barnyard mix are doing well for the most part too.

oddly enough it is my blue EE eggs that seem no show everything else is showing lots of veining
plenty of growth

I Number mine, too - especially since there are those I need to re-candle or have questions about. Also, I have the names of the hens (only 1 roo), and will be separating them prior to lockdown. I didn't do this last time and two of my OEs look so much like my BCMs that I couldn't tell them apart! (I almost sold one of them as a BCM - thankfully, I remembered their darker feet and was able to sell the correct birds!)
