8th-annual-byc-new-years-day-2017-hatch-a-long

Doesn't sound crazy at all..in fact..I've been called the crazy chicken lady, or even someone's chicken mom..because she likes chickens too and is younger.
I remember the first time I saw the heart beat in that shell!  Wow!!   And it never ceases to amaze me.  I love seeing the feet in there, and I have a great photo of the head and beak.  So fun to see them.  In fact, while candling tonight..I could see a nice feathered leg/foot.   Yes, I could tell there was nice feathering on that leg and foot!  Whoot!

And, you are helping to bring these babies come into the world.  :jumpy
And especially when those shipped eggs hatch - you've got to think about ALL they went through to become living, breathing, happily chirping little balls of fuzz!

What do you all use to mark your eggs? I've been using a soft leaded pencil, but it smears when I candle. Not that I'm entering any of my eggs in a fashion show, I just noticed (again) that it looks like I'm incubating dirty eggs!
lol, sharpie/pencil depends on what i can find
but i try to use different colors so i can see the AC change easier

Looks like at least half of my eggs are developing

Looks like I may get a couple silkies and showgirls after all! It's going to be hard to restrain myself from candling but I'll probably candle again on Monday. That will be day 10 and should be long enough to know for sure what's developing and what isn't.

YAYYYYY!!!

I do not not mark my eggs my hova turns them what would I mark for
leave that to the ones that want to play genetics and or show
not those of us playing with chicks
mark for ACs or if a staggered hatch

I candled. What a neat thing to see! Husband was even around to see one's heartbeat :) So far it looks like I have at least one quitter and two not fertilized. I'm leaving them in for now since I want to be SURE there's no development. I'm REALLY skeptical on the Marans eggs, but it may just be early for them as well. My NN mixes and Ameracaunas seem to be doing GREAT. My barnyard mix are doing well for the most part too.
Awesome!!

I've got La Bresse, Barbezieux, Dk Brahma, Blue Orpingtons, and Black&Blue Copper Maran eggs.
From California, Arizona, Mississippi, & New Jersey.

Kept four roosters from last years hatch. Sure hoping for a lot of hens this year!

I have three damaged eggs, does anyone have any suggestions on how to patch them up and hatch successfully?
liquid skin bandage works best for cracks

I have a question for you guys... I've tried using forced air incubators, but it seems like the eggs directly under the fan are cooler than the ones that are not. The rest of the eggs have a 100f temp, while the ones under are 93-95f so what the heck? I am clueless on how to fix this other than turning the fan off and using it as still air. I thought forced air would circulate same temp air throughout ALL the eggs, not just the ones away from the fan. What is your experience with forced air?
rotate them, most bators have hot/colds spots

I was going to wait until Sunday to candle... I've got veins in all but 2 or 3 of the eggs!
Yay!!!

I'm in California, hatching some eggs from Illinois. Over 1600 miles! What about you all?

I'm in Oklahoma. My eggs are from my own Jubilee Orpington pen. This is the first time for me to hatch eggs from that pen. I haven't seen them breeding lately, but I figured I would give it a try :)

Hope it's a good hatch, JO's are so beautiful!

My dad lived in Eufala, OK for many years. Jubilees are such beautiful birds! I hope you have a great hatch!
