It's a little giant still air incubator that I am using.

Those set to hatch on NYD are only on day 15 right now I'm going to prep my incubator for lockdown on Wednesday (day 17) by removing the turner and then I'll add water when I get home from work on Thursday to get geared up for hatching.

I've been semi-obsessive in the last few days reading through the different pages that blog site has about the days of incubation and what's happening

Mixed feelings tonight. Eggs are looking good and in lockdown (remember, early shipment), but we had to cull one of our chicks from our Dec 1 hatch whose legs, no matter what we tried (and I feel like we tried just about everything) , just got worse and worse. Special thanks to @BantyChooks

Sorry, it's so hard to do anyway, then when you have to when they are older..so sad.

Well guys I'm late to the party and not hatching this year but hopefully next new years I can join. In the meantime I'm going to live vicariously through all of you and sit on my hands so I don't mistakenly put some eggs under a broody silkie we currently have. our oldest chicks from a BYC friend are 5 weeks on Thursday and dh2b and I sorta agreed to wait until spring. Still chicks just break the monotony of the dead of winter up so well. ... Plus this morning we went out and found my 8 week old failure to thrive cuckoo Orpington chick that had finally been doing well the last few weeks dead this morning. what a bummer. Poor little thing. It looks like maybe it got squashed in a cuddle puddle although it had caught up and surpassed the size of the 4-5 week olds. Such is life. I have one more in the group of 4-5 week olds hopefully it's a pullet.

So everyone bring on the candling and hatching pics and stories sorry to take over the thread I'm just dieing here lol.

Sorry for your loss. It's so hard to make that decision for them I know we've been there a few times this last spring and it's never easy at least not for me but I'm glad you had the strength to do it for the baby. May I ask what method you used?

8-week old failure to thrive?? Ugh. I have one at 3-1/2 weeks, keep expecting to find it dead, but she hangs in there. Sorry for your loss.
I'm also hoping to wait until closer to spring, but new layers have me chomping at the bit!!

I had to laugh this morning when I found our first pip. The hen responsible for it is always the first one to greet me in the morning (and anytime I'm out in the yard) with all kinds of information. Her name "Peanut" is short for Peanut Gallery - always a comment coming from that one! So, of course, her chick would be the first one to greet me at hatching time!

We used ether in an airtight container. There's a very good article about it on this site.

I'm glad you used that method. So much more peaceful than taking the head off, IMO.....
