First time chicken owners here!
Everything has been going great for the past week or so, all 16 of our chicks are growing great. They have doubled in size. They are in a 4X4 foot brooder with plenty of food and water and pine shavings.
We have 5 cuckoo marons, 5 blue andalusians, 5 easter eggers and 1 dark brahmas (this one was a free novelty chick).
Starting yesterday, one of the large marons and the dark brahma started going at it pretty good. We noticed that the maron would ultimately end up standing over the dark brahma and the dark brahma would lower its head to the ground like it was submitting to the maron. Then they'd go their separate ways for 5 minutes and repeat. We assumed they were beginning their pecking order fighting, but were surprised they were starting already.
We left it alone but then saw the dark brahmas had a bloody spot on its beak and so we separated them.
Today, one of the blue andalusians (definitely a rooster) is now fighting with the dark brahmas.
We have not seen any other fights.
So, is this to be expected so young? Or could they be picking on the one chicken that is different from the rest? It is quite a bit smaller than the others.
