9 month old buff orpingtons not have not started laying

I have a friend that acquired 3 5-month old orpingtons back in September. He assumed they would start laying but they have not. He's feeding them laying mash and they are in a very nice backyard and coop - no dogs bothering them. Does anyone know why they wouldn't be laying??

They will most likely start in spring. Cold and short days probably prevented their starting before winter. But they will likely lay all next winter.

does he have any extra light in the coop? Turn a light on if he has electricity.
is he sure about the age? could they be younger?
my orp's started laying when their comb got really red.
