The little farm, northern Ohio
Hey y'all. I have a 9 month old pullet named Peggy who is very weak, not wanting to move around, just lays down all the time. She is a prairie bluebell egger and last laid on egg on Thursday. Egg was normal. She is not an everyday layer so her skipping a day or two is normal. She did drink a very little this morning but I haven't seen her drink since. Not eating at all. Her crop is squishy but not large and not impacted. She normally eats Nutrena Naturewise All Flock. Her six flockmates are all acting normal, eating, drinking, foraging. Peggy is more flighty and runs from me so when she let me pick her up, I knew we had an issue. She is very light and I can feel her bones. I gave her Nutridrench straight in her beak and she swallowed that, not quite 1ml. No wounds that I could see, no lice or mites. Her vent is nice and clean. No smell to her. She did poop and it was yellow and had form, then was diarrhea. I tried to get a picture but it was promptly stepped in. I did check inside her vent and did not feel an egg. But I did notice her one pupil was funny looking. The one is normal, nice and round. This one(picture provided) looks like a slit. No drainage anywhere, no sneezing or snotty nose. I have her separated in a dog cage but still in the run with her sisters. She has her own food and water and I'm about to scramble her an egg. I rarely feed them treats so this scrambled egg will be new to her. Beyond what I'm doing, what else can I do? I will not take her to a vet, I prefer to treat on my own. Here is the picture of her one funny looking pupil and a picture of her. I'll try and get a picture next time she poops. Thanks. @Wyorp Rock @azygous Edited to add that no new birds have come into this flock. It has been the same 7 ladies since October

Did they all come from the same source?

Check if she is blind in her right eye.

Yes, I bought them all at the same time, from the same bin, at Rural King. Back in October 2023. No new birds in and these girls have been great together. I even brooded them outside in the coop from day one. How would I check to see if she is blind? Just tap her eye or something? See if she reacts?

I agree with @LaFleche that the eye is suspicious of possible ocular Marek's. Compare the colored part of the eye with her other one. Is the color of the right eye muddy? As the ocular tumors grow, the pupil shrinks and becomes small and very irregular.

Marek's is lethal and this hen will likely die. When that happens, you can get a necropsy from a state lab to confirm Marek's. It's important to know if you have it in your flock.

Here is contact info to ask for more information about ocular Marek's and to find where a lab closest to you is. https://agri.ohio.gov/home/contact-ushttps://agri.ohio.gov/home/contact-us

Shine a flashlight and watch if there is a noticeable pupil reaction.
Hold a treat that can only be seen by her right eye.

But by your description of her condition I am afraid that she might be reaching the end of her days soon.

Was her eye normal at first?

Did you purchase her from a hatchery? MD vaccinated?
I just noticed this edit. Purchased them all together from Rural King. Not vaccinated

Thanks! Should I try and deworm them? Or should I wait to see if this girl goes even more downhill? Would ocular marek's happen fast? She was fine two days ago. I'm really hoping they just need dewormed
