Try googling pictures of Australorp hens. Their feathers are greenish purplish in the sun and all pretty, but they're still hens!

Thank you! I got them from Northwest Seed and Pet here in town. They had a bunch of them that hatched on June 15th and I got them as one week old sexed pullets. They told me they only have a 95% rate of success with sexing them as day olds though so if I ended up with any roos they could refund me for them. I'm glad I won't have to take them up on that offer.

I think the confusion comes from people making statements about a rooster having a shinier tail/hackle/sickle feathers. Until you've seen two birds of the same breed side-by-side and only one is a cockerel, it's hard to know how shiny exactly "shinier" might be.

And yes, a number of my pullets have iridescence on them. As I understand it, any bird with black feathering can have it -- the comparison between pullet and cockerel is a matter of degree rather than presence.

I think they are all girls! I think the greenish tinge to the black feathers is just natural for any black colors- the roos will be more solid colored on the body
